TV in 3: Mindy Kaling’s Slow Start Tests Hulu, Peacock’s World Cup Win

Plus: Paramount-WBD form a Harry Potter pact early

I wrote about Quinta Brunson’s WB defection, the shakeups coming from the Fox-Roku deal, how Paramount chaos is spooking showrunners and the three big exec showdowns to come in a Paramount-WBD merger. I’m lesley.goldberg@theankler.com

What an insane ending to Thursday’s USA vs. Türkiye match! Granted, I’m a soccer newbie, but that was a riveting and super-competitive game and I certainly wasn’t expecting us to lose it in the 98th minute! (Never fear, the U.S. team already qualified for the knockout round and will play Bosnia and Herzegovina July 1.)

So yeah, this week I’m surrendering to the World Cup mania and going deeper on how Peacock is making the most of Telemundo’s Spanish-language coverage, including some eye-popping viewership details. On the scripted side, all eyes (or mine, at least) are on Hulu as the Disney-backed platform faces a difficult choice when it comes to its new Mindy Kaling comedy Not Suitable for Work — whose fate might be a signal for other original laffers. And elsewhere, with a new deal around linear distribution of the Harry Potter movies, Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery are getting a jump on a potential integration — that still faces some tough regulatory scrutiny from state attorneys general, by the way, as The Wakeup’s Sean McNulty explored with a whip-smart analysis earlier this week.

Let’s get into it.
