☀️Two Japan pics set U.S. Box Office records as Bey plummets

More Broadcast TV axings / Cocomelon layoffs / ‘Poor Things’ starts strong / APPLE gets Theron-Craig action pic

Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LinkedIn here if ya like), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on MONDAY December 11, 2023.

Where L.A. was 1-1 this weekend in championship games… the LAFC lost in its MLS Championship game to COLUMBUS, but the LAKERS won the first NBA Cup.

Although the real winner was the 29-year-old baseball player currently recovering from his… second elbow surgery who just got a $700 Million contract for 10 years from the L.A. DODGERS. So, when if you see ticket and/or concession prices go up at DODGERS STADIUM this spring, well, I’m sure Shohei Ohtani will send you a thank-you note.

AND: GOLDEN GLOBE nominations come out this morning at 8 a.m. ET.

PLUS: Here are your L.A. Film Critics Award winners.

ALSO: WB did an interesting… and very expensive ad buy last night in NBC Sunday Night Football – a two-minute spot combining Wonka, Aquaman 2 and The Color Purple, complete with behind the scenes & interview clips alongside film footage.

THEN: NETFLIX did its own ‘holiday’ brand spot last night in NBC SNF, oddly featuring the year-old Wednesday 🤷‍♂️, but really heavily featuring… two non-NETFLIX pics – Super Mario Bros and Spider-Man: Across the Universe 👀.

MEANWHILE: Here was Biden’s weekend in LA and some reactions to where the campaign stands. His fundraisers added $15 Million to the coffers according to Biden Victory Fund co-chair, Jeffrey Katzenberg.

REST IN PEACE: Goes out to Ryan O’Neal who died on Friday at the age of 82.

IN THIS EDITION

  • Poor Things shows promise as JAPAN has a huge showing, NETFLIX exec payday reveals, latest in Broadcast TV axings, FIFTH SEASON sells a large chunk, and much more.

AND: CHEVROLET definitely pulls the heartstrings once again in its big holiday ad that aired yesterday in NFL games, and yes like AMAZON and TOYOTA, it’s going with the grandma genre (note: this is the extended/digital-only version).

📽 THE SILVER SCREEN

BOX OFFICE

JAPAN both topped this week’s chart, and is having the surprise of the Holiday movie season so far, as Beyoncé has the worst week 2 drop for a top 5 concert movie… and Specialty shows some more signs of life!
