TV in 3: Hard Numbers on Netflix’s Sophomore Slump Tell a Tough Story

The new data drop reveals the streamer can launch hits, but franchises are harder. Plus: a silver lining in limited series

For today’s TV in 3, I’m focusing on Netflix’s latest viewership report out Thursday afternoon. The data sheds some light on the narratives I’ve been following amid reports that the streaming giant has an engagement problem — and is looking at other avenues like live TV and bundling in a bid to combat challenges facing shows in their second seasons.

Before I dive in, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos confirmed my Wednesday report that the company has no plans to change its famed binge model (despite chatter inside and outside the company that a rethink could boost engagement). He told analysts during Thursday’s earnings call that there will be “no changes in release strategies.” As they say, it’s true… for now.
