So after a summer of a few big movies, everything is all right.
We’re all saved!
Phew, that was a close call, you think. But thanks to Spider-Man and The Odyssey, we don’t have to worry about anything ever again.
Not so fast, buster.
Loyal readers know there’s nothing I love more than wallowing in any available scrap of good news and telling myself, “See? It’s all going to be fine.”
Who could begrudge me a few moments of self-deception now and then? After the multitude of hells we endured, I’m more than entitled to say – Covid, the strikes, the streaming bubble? Ancient history! Post-OdysSpidey (I’m starting this portmanteau here), it’s nothing but roses once again.
If only.
The problems we’ve endured stem from structural issues and some intractable bad priorities that persist. A great summer can change the mood. It doesn’t necessarily change the machinery underneath it.
These things were strangling us a few months ago, and it might be worth asking — are the demons really slain or just napping?
So before we declare victory, here are a few reasons this summer’s success may prove harder to repeat than we’d like — starting with next summer.
