The Ankler

Mornin! Here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026.

Where I have some choice “PSKY Ticking Fee” merch available, really cheap. Inquire within.

My CANVA AI did great work on the designs; it would be a shame to waste it.

Hmm, does anyone have a contact for the Globes this year? Via Giphy

OH: The Tribeca Festival will be from June 3 to June 12 next spring.

WELL: In the “take what you can get in 2026” category, ROKU is doing a Battle of the Streaming Stars competition series from OMAHA modeled after the Battle of the Network Stars specials of yore. We’ll see who the prize of a . . . gold ROKU TV remote brings out 🤷‍♂️. 2 specials have been ordered with Terry Crews hosting.

THEN: FCC honcho Brendan Carr kept his rep on brand, saying Trump’s taxpayer-funded ads touting his “accomplishments” are the same as PSAs “that you see all the time.”Ah Brendan, so 🤌 — well done.

OH: Sydney Sweeney’s sports gambling predictions app NOVIG got a $2B valuation in a new fundraising round (she is an equity partner in the company), although no details on how much new money was raised from existing investors. Also no word on the spread for how long this thing lasts.

YEAH: Gotta love self-inflicted first-round playoff headaches still happening in pro sports in 2026:

  • WNBA: Many players and coaches think the league’s current 1-1-1 setup (the teams going back and forth to each other’s arenas for each game) is the worst way to do a 3-game series. Many think going to a 5-game format is a good idea . . . but that would require increased payments to players per the league’s deal with its players’ association.
    • ALTHOUGH: The WNBA had its biggest playoff game audience ever with the FEVER vs. ACES (Caitlin vs. A’ja), getting 2.1M viewers on ABC Sunday afternoon against NFL football.
  • MLB: With four Wild Card matchups per day on Tuesday and Wednesday, weekday afternoon first-pitch times meant some MLB stadiums were only at about 75% capacity for playoff games this week.

AH: APPLE’s next reported product launch — a “smart home” device that’s a 6-inch square display that can recognize who it’s talking to and give customized answers, schedules, etc. Ya know, just like, say . . . that iPhone you already paid for in your hand that can probably do the same things this thing will do.

PLUS: The NY Times looks at the 100 ZEROES partnership between GOOGLE and RANGE MEDIA, funding some lower-budget creative projects — some centered around tech and AI, some not (but perhaps projects where characters use GOOGLE phones, etc.).

  • It has backed films like last year’s Sentimental Value and this summer’s The Wrong Girls, as well as, yes, microdrama projects.

FINALLY: I’ll be at the BLOOMBERG Screentime event again today in L.A. (if any readers are also attending, say hello!), where I’m sure the Casey Bloys conversation prep certainly got some new questions yesterday.

  • Last night, Ted Sarandos confirmed that he’s very excited to put the KPop Demon Hunters sequel in theaters . . . and pretty heavily hinted that NETFLIX adding a “Channels” program (being able to subscribe to DIS+, PEACOCK, etc., in the NETFLIX app) is likely in NETFLIX’s future.
    • He also nodded to being unhappy with current “engagement” growth trends (hours watched on the platform).
  • NETFLIX director Ben Affleck also confirmed he used his new AI tools on his new film Animals, but declined to offer specifics.
  • And kudos on the Tacos 1986 food offering last night, delicious!

WAKEUP Box Office Prediction

WB’s Digger outlook keeps getting worse. The film was tracking a little over $20M about a week ago in some numbers I saw . . . and is now looking like this weekend could deliver as little as half of that, or up to $15M if you’re feeling positive.

Either way, this is probably going to be brutal. Not quite a $7M The Bride! opening . . . but I’ll go with a bit of a curiosity factor plus IMAX lifting this to $11M to $14M, and keep a good thought out there for WB.

AS ALWAYS: Connect with me on LINKEDIN here if ya like or email me at seanmcnultynyc@gmail.com anytime.

Meanwhile, On PARAMOUNT Mountain . . .

We’re still working on the “King” thing, but give us some time. Via Giphy
