SMARTLESS podcast $60+ Million AMAZON MUSIC deal / SOPRANOS prequel trailer / FACEBOOK’s new newsletter service explained

Mornin! This is Sean McNulty and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on WEDNESDAY June 30, 2021.

Where… given that WONDERY is involved in the “Smartless” $60+ Million deal with AMAZON MUSIC (more below in THE MEDIA BIZ), let’s start the day at The Home That WONDERY Bought. Or at least made the downpayment for. WONDERY founder Hernan Lopez just bought this place above the Sunset Strip for $20 Millionthen again when you sell your company for $300 Million to AMAZON, you’re probably good for it.

📽 THE SILVER SCREEN

DIRECTORS GUILD says films must have an exclusive 7-day run in theaters to be eligible for DGA awards

Condition was lifted last year in the pandemic, but now… no.

So – all movies released after June 15 this year that also hit streaming on the same date (or premiere exclusively on streaming) will not be considered.

Yeah… this may change the October “Dune” plan at WB – HBOMAX. /THR

FACEBOOK newsletter service BULLETIN announces writers for launch, but isn’t a true SUBSTACK competitor. Yet.

Malcolm Gladwell, Erin Andrews, author Mitch Albom and “Queer Eye” personality Tan France are some of the names announced yesterday who will be (paid by FB) to write newsletters on BULLETIN.

While it’s somewhat similar to SUBSTACK (or TWITTER’s REVUE) in that writers can write Free or Paid Subscription newsletters distributed to anyone with a, well, email address (#TheWakeup 👋), and writers maintain ownership of the newsletter and control of their subscriber list… this isn’t a real competitor, yet.

Unlike SUBSTACK / REVUE… BULLETIN is currently only available to writers that FB invites to use it, with no announced timeline to open it up to anyone who wants to do one, or even establishing an application process for people to create one. FB says they’ll do this eventually… but no timeline given.

So essentially – with BULLETIN’s launch, FACEBOOK is once again becoming a Media company, paying select writers of their choosing to write content housed on their platform/tech. /The Verge

WHY IS FB DOING THIS?

  • New way to increases user time spent on the platform.

  • Ad revenue potential – can see FB offering tools for writers/creators to insert ads into their newsletters once platform is opened up.

  • Subscription revenue potential – FB is not taking a cut of subscriber revenue now, but they will starting in 2023. Said cut is TBD. (SUBSTACK takes 10%, TWITTER-owned REVUE takes 5%).

WHY WOULD WRITERS USE BULLETIN vs SUBSTACK, REVUE etc?

  • Can easily connect/integrate with massive FB ecosystem in addition to matching the benefits of (those eventual) competitors: anyone can sign up for your newsletter, you own your subscriber list, etc.

  • Thinking BULLETIN newsletters will be given a nice prioritization in the News Feed algorithm especially to people who Like things similar to the topic of your newsletter.

    • In addition, FB will likely give you promotion methods to existing GROUPS related to your newsletter topic to help increase your subscriber list.
