No newsletter is an island; or not forever anyway. Today I bring you the first of what will be regular special editions written by Ankler contributor, the sagacious Entertainment Strategy Guy, expert in the numbers of this business who shall remain anonymous due to his connections to the industrial-entertainment complex. While I contemplate the coincidence of Molly Sims producing a show at her husband’s streaming service, please share your thoughts below and welcome ESG. – RR

Let’s start with two questions to make you question your epistemic certainty in life. First…

Was the TV series Manifest a bigger hit for Netflix or NBC?

And second…

Which of these bar charts is higher?

If you answered “Netflix, duh” and then the tan line, prepare for your mind to be blown.

But obviously, you read the title and know where I’m going with this, so let me just give it to you:

That’s right. By my math, more folks watched more total minutes of Manifest on NBC than they did this summer on Netflix. Which feels crazy, given the coverage of Manifestby the trades and associated-entertainment websites. I mean, is it weird to call the numbers “monstrous”, “incredible”, and “stunning” if they’re the same as NBC?
