☀️A NETFLIX Q4 Narratives Guide, plus Bev Hills Cop 4 is not a 2023 thing

YOUTUBE & NETFLIX set dueling Upfronts / APPLE’s Q1 new series barrage / DISH drops new cord-cutting numbers

Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LinkedIn here if ya like), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on THURSDAY January 19, 2023.

Where in a move that couldn’t be better thematically timed with the NFL Playoffs competition… the big Q4 earnings season kicks off later today with NETFLIX.

A quick handy refresher, and things to expect on the not live-stream executive “call” later today are down in THE MEDIA BIZ section.

ALTHOUGH HUH… Where was “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley” on NETFLIX’s 2023 Films docket yesterday? 🤔. While a date was never officially stated, the film was already in production in Fall/late 2022 with Kevin Bacon and Joseph Gordon Levitt, but according to a NETFLIX source – “Beverly Hills Cop 4” will not come out in 2023.

  • ALSO: Keep in mind, that 49 NETFLIX Films in 2023 number is just the English language slate. Granted – they provide the vast majority of NETFLIX Films viewership… but the overall 2023 NETFLIX Film spend / title count will be much higher.

AND: SUNDANCE begins tonight.

PLUS: Your MET GALA co-chairs are… Richard and I! This year’s theme is “The Regular Guy look” (sorry that’s a deep cut for any fellow “Easy Money” fans).

SPEAKING OF EASY MONEY: Chapek’s Comms head who lasted less than 4 months at DISNEY – Geoff Morell, walked away with $8 Million for his troubles #jobwelldone🤝. Plus another $1 Million to move his family to LA… and then out of LA.

  • All of these paydays are gonna look real great if when the DISNEY layoffs that Chapek alluded to in November arrive… though funny I don’t recall “Executive Compensation” as being on Nelson Peltz’s list of spending problems with you people.

REST IN PEACE: Goes out to film producer Edward Pressman (“Wall Street”, “American Psycho” and too many to really mention), who died at 79 years old on Tuesday.

THEN: Cory Matthews Ben Savage is running for Congress! He filed papers to run as a Democratic candidate in the district expected to be vacated if/when Adam Schiff runs for Senator.

CORRECTION: The dates for the NETFLIX Box Office chart yesterday were Jan 9 to Jan 15, my apologies for not updating my calendar notes properly.

IN TODAY’S EDITION:

  • DISH’s Q4 cord cutting numbers come in early, as they rush to build their 5G network

  • LIONSGATE sets director for MJ biopic

  • New TWITTER Q4 loss numbers

  • “Night Court” scores big for NBC, but NFL Wild Card weekend… not so much

  • IMAX expanding in JAPAN (their 3rd largest market)

  • A look at the topics likely to dominate the NETFLIX call later today (one day we’ll get excited about NETFLIX gaming right?)

  • APPLE TV drops trailers indicating they’ll be releasing… more or less a new series almost every week for the next month (this amount of volume is new). Let the 2022 production spending cavalcade begin, and more.
