☀️GLASS ONION scores biggest week for a NETFLIX Film in 2022

ENDEAVOR stock takes hit on incident with UFC CEO / STARZ drops canceled shows from App / Record BROADWAY week

Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LinkedIn here if ya like), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on WEDNESDAY January 4, 2023.

Where in what couldn’t be a more 2020s metric of health, Jeremy Renner posted a selfie, which is certainly a good sign – even though he said he’s “too messed up now to type” in his brief message.

As for the accident, apparently his Sno-Cat plow began slowly sliding backwards after he got out of it when plowing out a family member in a stranded car near his home in Reno, NV, and he was trying to stop it when the incident occurred.

PLUS: A kudos to the BROADWAY production of “Funny Girl” which has turned into quite a success story with Lea Michele in the leadit set the one-week Revenue record for the AUGUST WILSON Theater last week.

  • Granted it was for 9 performances (and the ticket price average was up about +$10 with holiday pricing), but still pretty amazing evidence of what a re-casting can do for a BROADWAY show, to not only turn around the overall narrative, but also subsequently the box office take as well.

It was actually a red-letter week all around on BROADWAY, with many shows posting at or near records – info in the Deadline link.

AND: The BILLS / BENGALS game will unsurprisingly not resume this week. The challenge, outside of giving time to the players to take care of their mental health, is their physical health – teams typically get at least 3 full days off between games, an even more important consideration going into the Playoffs.

  • Both teams play on Sunday, and the Wildcard playoffs begin next Saturday. Both teams are definitely playoff bound, with the BILLS in contention to skip the first round (this suspended game plays a role in sorting out how the final standings shake out).

So the NFL could cancel the game and use other metrics to sort the standings, or possibly push a Wildcard round a day so the game can be played next week? (Wildcard weekend is MLK weekend, so shifting games from mostly Sat/Sun to Sun/Mon likely isn’t out of the question… although TV schedules get tricky, esp as there is already a Monday night Wildcard game this year). Either way – a lot to figure out.

There was no reported change in Damar Hamlin’s critical condition as of this morning, as doctors continue to try and wean him off using a ventilator to breathe on his own.

IN TODAY’S EDITION:

  • There’s more to know behind the “Glass Onion” viewership headlines that were out and about yesterday – dive into the views and other data in this week’s NETFLIX Box Office chart to see how it’s really stacking up on its 2022 record making week.

  • Pretty quiet day otherwise as HOLLYWOOD’s wheels slowly begin moving again, except for a not ideal day for ENDEAVOR stock… after the head of the UFC got into a drunken slapping altercation with his wife on video.

  • NIELSEN also finally set their launch plans for new ‘product’ NIELSEN ONE. A day after WBD announced they were signing a deal with a competitor.

usual caveats: back of the napkin math, assumes everyone finished the movie (including the credits), no one watched twice, or that a bunch of folks didn’t rewind certain parts, etc. so consider these minimum numbers. and it’s based on NETFLIX’s self-reported numbers.

“Glass Onion” now tops the 2022 NETFLIX Movie chart for most views in a week. So yeah… a week in theaters ain’t gonna kill ya NETFLIX. What’s that? 2 weeks for “Beverly Hills Cop 4” this Summer?? Don’t be ridiculous.

Here’s the breakdown of the numbers, and what’s a bit deceptive about the headlines you may have seen around it yesterday…
