Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LINKEDIN here if ya like or email me at seanmcnultynyc@gmail.com), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on Thursday, May 21, 2026.

Where it’s always nice to see the world financial system’s moral compass coming from . . . Singapore and Hong Kong.

Yes, in addition to some actual “seriously, bro?” rumblings in the domestic financial community — regulators in both of those APAC markets are seeking clarity from U.K. STANDARD CHARTER bank CEO Bill Winters after he referred to some of his employees in the ⭐️ AI Quote of the Year as “lower-value human capital” when discussing, essentially, firing as many of them as he possibly can in the rest of the 2020s.

ALSO: OPENAI is already iterating on the formats that advertisers can use on CHATGPT, or I guess the “format,” since there is kinda only one.

MEANWHILE: GOOGLE is also putting AI-generated ads further into search results, hold for applause. Man, what happened to the “ads are dead!” mid-2010s?

KUDOS: Montreal’s PWHL women’s hockey team, MONTREAL VICTOIRE, for bringing a pro-league hockey championship back to the city for the first time since 1993 (and the first PWHL championship for Canada overall).

  • The NHL’s MONTREAL CANADIENS also advanced to the semi-final Stanley Cup Playoffs stage this week.

AND: The Trump 2.0 economy keeps coming up roses for America’s working class — a new study from the nonpartisan National Bureau of Economic Research shows that American construction workers were more heavily affected by Trump’s ICE deportation policies than the undocumented immigrant group being targeted.

  • Now, you won’t believe this . . . but American construction employers seemingly chose to build less due to the shrunken worker pool, sapped of cheaper immigrant labor, rather than pay the higher 💰 rates needed to replace the (lower-paid) immigrant workers with American citizens.
  • Way to keep it on brand, Corporate America! Also — fewer new houses = higher housing prices for the rest of us, too.
  • THUS: Permits for new housing units were -7.4% YoY in March, and residential housing construction employment was -1.5% YoY in April — likely also not helped by the state of Trump policy-juiced interest rates as well.
  • But at least they’re not making factory workers wear body cameras so robots can eventually be taught the motions needed for their jobs . . . to eventually put those workers out of a job. Real classy, India.

YAH: Just in case you thought fans subsidizing increased sports salaries was just an American thing — the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE final will air on HBO MAX in the U.K. this year (or watch on the $41 a month TNT SPORTS streamer if ya like) . . . the first time the game will not be on free TV since it was launched decades ago.

  • The game airs on free CBS here in the U.S. (Sat. May 30).
  • EUROPA LEAGUE and CONFERENCE LEAGUE championships will also not be on free TV / on HBO MAX / TNT SPORTS for the first time ever.
  • The U.K. has clubs playing in all 3 finals this year.

WELL: Nothing like having revenue +85% YoY in Q1, when you were already making $44B in 3 months a year ago — NVIDIA also is forecasting 95% growth in Q2.

  • NVIDIA cleared $58B in Net Profit in Q1 alone — that’s more money than META made in total revenue in Q1 (although if you’re a non-GAAP measurement person, that’s smaller at uh, just $45.5B in net profit).

OH: For any recent or soon-to-be college grads out there (or otherwise) — UTA is holding info sessions for its Winter Training Program, applications for which open next week.

Wakeup Box Office Preview

It’s Grogu time on Memorial Day weekend! Aka the former traditional start of summer, pre-MARVEL.

The forecasts have mainly lingered around $80M/$85M for the traditional weekend period, but factor in any pent-up Star Wars theatrical demand as ya like on top!

I’ll go $90M+ myself and put some belief in the force of the audience — there’s something to being away for a while.

New Pod

In honor of the formerly traditional Memorial Day weekend start of summer, Natalie enlisted Elaine and me in a summer movie draft to give our real thoughts on the potential winners of the season this year.
