Hollywood’s old boys’ club is back in business. Or at least it sure feels that way.
In the past month alone, two of the industry’s most powerful women — Bela Bajaria and Cindy Holland — have been pushed out in a manner that doesn’t sit well with many, and replaced by men. Pam Abdy and — this just in — Holland lieutenant Jane Wiseman didn’t survive the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger. Dana Walden lost Disney’s CEO succession race to Josh D’Amaro. And Jennifer Salke was already out at Amazon.
Individually, each departure has its own corporate explanation. But taken together, they raise an uncomfortable question: After years of Hollywood pledging to put more women in power — remember all those 50-50 pledges hahaha — is the industry going backward?
I spoke to several women who have occupied Hollywood’s highest executive ranks, and they have some pointed — and surprisingly different — explanations for what’s happening.
Plus, in this week’s TV in 3: YouTube pulls even further ahead of Netflix, and Jon Stewart gets a surprising vote of confidence from David Ellison.
