Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LinkedIn here if ya like), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on WEDNESDAY Dec 27, 2023.
Where I hope everyone is successfully returning to normal from a holiday eating and all-day sports-viewing or moviegoing lifestyle – and clearly this little guy won CHRISTMAS.

ALSO: APPLE has offered as much as $50 Million for multi-year deals with news publishers to train the AI its developing, according to the NY Times.
A product that arguably will be a future key pillar of a company that made $23 Billion in net income in Q3 alone.
Yeah, that seems like a fair deal.
PLUS: The NY Times is suing OPEN AI and MICROSOFT for copyright infringement, getting a jump start on what’s sure to be one of the major ongoing AI development headlines in 2024.
OPEN AI is in a new round of fundraising negotiations that would value it at over $100 Billion.
AND: AMAZON PRIME’s latest trailer… ads! Premiering Mon Jan. 29.

REST IN PEACE: Goes out to Lee Sun-kyun, who starred in Parasite (he was the wealthy architect patriarch), who died of an apparent suicide at age 48. He was recently under investigation for drug use allegations.
IN THIS EDITION
AMERICA showed up at the movies on CHRISTMAS! An all-new film handily beat tracking, and Wonka showed a little extra juice as well… even if Aquaman did not. See “What America Paid to Watch” at movie theaters on CHRISTMAS day…
AND: See what they watched at home on NETFLIX! At least through CHRISTMAS EVE. Though it looks like they weren’t watching as much of the new Zack Snyder and Bradley Cooper offerings as NETFLIX may have hoped… but, some timing notes to caveat.
PLUS: DISNEY takes the next step in getting a nice big check in INDIA.
PLUS: A year-end deal for you! 👇

NETFLIX Films Weekly Global Viewership Chart

Week of Dec 18 thru Dec 24:
usual caveats: back of the napkin math, assumes everyone finished the movie (including the credits), no one watched twice, or that a bunch of folks didn’t rewind certain parts, etc. so consider these minimum numbers. and it’s based on NETFLIX’s self-reported numbers.
Zack Snyder’s NETFLIX pic debut is well below previous CHRISTMAS comps; Maestro is a no-show
FIRST: Rebel Moon Pt 1 certainly got a decent amount of opening weekend viewership vs. an average NETFLIX Film – but given its coveted CHRISTMAS slot on NETFLIX, well… here’s what we have, and the caveats to know.
