The Ankler

Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LinkedIn here if ya like), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on TUESDAY June 13, 2023.

Where a kudos goes out to the DENVER NUGGETS, who won their first NBA Championship ever last night, defeating the MIAMI HEAT 4 games to 1.

AND: Gotta love their 28-year-old MVP Nikola Jokic, the first NBA player to lead the playoffs in points, rebounds and assists (not Magic, not Jordan, not LeBron), and his trademark candor in his post-game interview when asked about looking forward to celebrating (in his defense, dude’s been playing hoops non-stop for 9 months):

SO: After what’s likely the end of the Stanely Cup Finals tonight (it’s on TNT with no Streaming option so I haven’t been watching) – the great annual Sports calendar hangover now takes hold… leaving us (and the Linear TV ecosystem) with PGA Golf, a little early morning Tennis #Wimbledon, WNBA, Saturday US Soccer and… mid-season Baseball for the next 2.5 months 🫣.

But hey – at least Elaine will be very happy that I’ll have very little Sports talk for her on The Ankler podcast in the next few months!

I’m sure The Ankler’s Elaine’s equally loves a good happy dance. via Giphy

AND: If Ari owes you money (I told him not to take the HEAT… 🙄) – he’s good for it, having sold about $12 Million worth of ENDEAVOR stock in May.

ALSO: Jonathan Majors returns to court today in NYC.

PLUS: COMCAST shareholders overwhelmingly approved the pay packages for the company’s top execs, sorry WGA (votes were 343 Mil to 30 Mil).

THEN: Pat Sajak announced the upcoming ‘23-’24 season will be his last year as Wheel of Fortune host. That will make 41 years in the role for Pat – TBA if the executive producer of the show will audition in the bake-off to replace him.

IN TODAY’S EDITION:

  • NETFLIX looks to set up a kinda NETFLIX Sports All-Stars event as their first Live Sports entry.

  • Initial reports emerging from the Upfronts do not paint a good picture.

  • Tom Cruise welcomed back into CHINA this July (presumably no logo blurring needed this time).

  • First the PGA, now the GOLDEN GLOBES enter a deal with a lot more questions remaining around it, than direction.

  • The Athletic layoffs indicate a shift in strategy from the NY Times parent-co #FollowTheProfitability, and more.

A REST IN PEACE: Goes out to Treat Williams, who died in a motorcycle accident at 71-years-old yesterday in VT.
