☀️NETFLIX & SEARCHLIGHT write big SUNDANCE checks

OSCAR noms out / VERIZON loses 10% of TV subs in 2022 / Matt & Ben going theatrical at AMAZON

Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LinkedIn here if ya like), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on TUESDAY January 24, 2023.

Where here are your 2023 OSCAR nominees. I’ll leave the tea leaves to all of you.

OF NOTE OFF THE BAT:

ACTRESS: Ana De Armas for “Blonde” (one of those rare Razzie / OSCAR movies), Andrea Riesborough gets a nom for “To Leslie” (the strong celeb campaigning apparently worked).

  • But no Viola Davis (“The Woman King”), or Danielle Deadwyler (“Till”).

ACTOR: Hope you bought that Paul Mescal (“Aftersun”) stock last week.

DIRECTOR: No Cameron, but yes for Ruben Ostlund – “Triangle of Sadness” (which also gets a Picture nom).

PICTURE: No “BP2” but yes “Top Gun: Maverick” (and “Avatar 2”).

  • Streamers get 1 nom of the 10, “All Quiet on the Western Front” for NETFLIX (which also got a Best Int’l Film nod). NETFLIX did get 2 of the 5 Animated Pic nods (“Sea Beast” and “GDT’s Pinocchio”).

SCRIPT: “Glass Onion” got a nod here… but not the other major categories.

Two other performances I was happy to see noticed from talent on the rise – Brian Tyree Henry in “Causeway” (best supp actor) and Stephanie Hsu in “Everything Everywhere” (best supp actress).

IN TODAY’S EDITION:

  • AMAZON goes theatrical with Matt & Ben

  • VERIZON’s latest window into cord cutting, and the burgeoning Fixed Wireless business

  • What NETFLIX spent $20 Million on at SUNDANCE

  • “The Last of Us” looks even more like HBO’s next franchise-level hit

  • DISCO+ ditches lean-back channel viewing in the app, and more
