☀️Blum & Wan in excl Wakeup interview, & uh The GLOBES happened 🤷‍♂️

PALE BLUE EYE tops GLASS ONION on NFLX chart / DISNEY adjusts park tix policies / WBD stock gets positive Wall Street nods

Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LinkedIn here if ya like), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on WEDNESDAY January 11, 2023.

Where the GLOBES 2023 are a wrap (here is your winners list). Place your bets on 2024… but according to the Wakeup Poll crew yesterday, 80% of you are expecting an audience under 9 Million, with pretty much all of you expecting below 11 Million.

Special shout out to Mike White who reminded the room that everyone in that room passed on “The White Lotus” besides HBO, and to Eddie Murphy who used the end of his speech to remind everyone of Will Smith.

But sadly Ben Affleck couldn’t make it – he apparently had to pull a shift at DUNKIN’ outside Boston. Yes seriously, why do you ask?

AND NEW PODCAST!

So we’re launching a new thing!

After a 2022 full of… 😭 headlines, I want to start shining more light on things that are succeeding in the industry as we go forward in 2023, and dive into why they’re working from the people behind them!

SO: I asked the 2 big names behind 2023’s first huge success story“M3GAN”, JASON BLUM and JAMES WAN to join me on The Ankler podcast to talk about:

  • What made the movie & the campaign work

  • How they look at tracking (or don’t)

  • When their well-seasoned Horror phenom senses picked up that the film was building a real groundswell

  • How & when they approach sequels to their franchises

  • What they’re taking away from the “M3GAN”experience and more.

    • As Jason put it: “Thank God this one part of the business is still working!”

At the NETFLIX Global Box Office

usual caveats: back of the napkin math, assumes everyone finished the movie (including the credits), no one watched twice, or that a bunch of folks didn’t rewind certain parts, etc. so consider these minimum numbers. and it’s based on NETFLIX’s self-reported numbers.

“Glass Onion” fell about 65% from the holiday week-off where everyone was home, with “The Pale Blue Eye” proving to be a formidable challenger in its first full week, especially compared with other NETFLIX OSCAR hopeful pics.

“Onion” has a little under 2 weeks…
