Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LINKEDIN here if ya like or email me at seanmcnultynyc@gmail.com), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on Friday, July 10, 2026.
Where, gee, BROWN economics professor — I dunno what happened between our take-home mid-term and our in-class final exam. 🤔
Note that this chart is just the “Top” 17 results — there were 59 students taking the exam. Gen Z . . . put down the AI.
YEAH: The NYT and other news outlets are accusing OPENAI of essentially lying about being able to search its own training datasets and output logs in their ongoing trial. 😱
AND: PSKY has said the WARNAMOUNT deal won’t close before Wednesday, July 22 (July 16 was the previous “earliest” date), which is when the EU is set to render its next decision.
- So, next week really looks to be the powder keg time for state AGs. Oregon awaits a judge’s ruling on Monday regarding its request for a 60-day delay.
OH: This was an interesting read about how financial advisors cite Belle Burden’s Strangers as a major reason they’re seeing more women seeking to understand and take more control of their finances in their marriages.
YAH: Add the EU to the chorus of government regulators saying META failed to guard its users from physical and mental health detriments due to social media use.
PLUS: 2 top music industry associations (RIAA and IFPI) are proposing a new labeling protocol for music streamers for AI music — AI-generated and AI-assisted. The Grammys, SAG-AFTRA and other organizations have also voiced their support for the initiative.
ALSO: LA28 moved the international broadcast center over to the new WARNER BROS. RANCH facility in Burbank, Calif., which is several miles away from most of the action.
STOCK CHECK: COMCAST stock is basically still where it was before the NBCU split was announced.
YUP: The BANIJAY / ALL3MEDIA deal is now street legal.
AH: Former LIBERTY MEDIA honcho Greg Maffei is leading efforts to launch an “F1 for horse racing” league called the, well, HRL — Horse Racing League. You know I love it when folks keep naming simple.
- The gist is to have 10 “teams” of 8 horses each compete in events at the top racetracks. 3 teams have been announced so far (including one with SPYGLASS’ Gary Barber as a principal).
- 3 events are on the docket for 2027 to start (Santa Anita in L.A. in February, Gulfstream in Miami and Keeneland in Kentucky later in the year), with plans to expand.
YEAH: Not a great start for Moana out there yesterday at $4.5M, which is below Lightyear‘s start ($50M opening weekend), but we’ll see if momentum builds this weekend.
