Introducing my Boldness Awards! Plenty of people had guts this year, if you knew where to look
At this dark moment for the industry, there’s plenty to criticize, no shortage of places to point the finger.
And at the top of the list of complaints is the meltdown of creativity at the studio level — the retreat from seemingly anything that is not a bland, four-quadrant pre-sold “action comedy.”
But even in these dark times, risks still happen, chances are taken and entertainment creeps forward.
Given that, with the holiday feeling of gratitude and goodwill to all, I wanted to kick off a tradition: The Hollywood Boldness Awards, something I made up to honor those who stuck their necks out, tried something different and took a chance.
Whether those risks succeeded wildly or never took off is not my concern; the fact that there are people still out there trying to buck the tide is a miracle, so for one brief moment, before returning to our regularly scheduled recriminations, let’s raise a glass to those who dared.
