Welcome to the Jamboree, my weekly takes on the industry’s passing parade.

For those of us who were already fretting about Where All This Is Headed, the events of yesterday, when Charlie Kirk was assassinated, were terribly upsetting and certainly didn’t make it any easier to focus on trainwrecks, Hollywood style.

When talking about all that’s happening, our words and tempers often get very heated, which is natural and understandable — this isn’t Parcheesi, and there are some big things on the line right now. But the reason we get so worked up is the specter that we could be on the way to political violence — perhaps in the hands of the state — becoming a regular feature of our lives. To that point, anyone who suggests violence against our political enemies is okay, desirable, not a big deal, or even couched with a “yeah, but they…” is a demon, hurrying us on the road to the dark place that we’re all fighting to hold back.

There’s a lot of poison in our national consciousness, and it has been seeping in for a long time. Fight the poison, wherever you bump into it, with words, argument and political action, not with more poison.

And with that, on with the show. I haven’t done a Jamboree in a few weeks, so there’s a lot piled up on the desk. Let’s get to it...
