☀️M. Night tops Box Office... but 80 FOR BRADY gets bigger audience
PAR's lower ticket price gambit / CHRISTIAN TV show out-earns most OSCAR noms / WB, JJ & Leo get Stephen King book rights
Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LinkedIn here if ya like), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on MONDAY February 6, 2023.
Where SNL brilliantly encapsulated what making 599 TV Series a year has done to our collective sense of cultural impact. This was great 👏.
AND: In addition to being a fantastic live music show (special shout out to the A+ Hip-Hop uh, super medley? - of which Will Smith was supposed to be a part of but apparently he had to do some “Bad Boys 4” stuff 🤷♂️)… THE GRAMMYS are always an ideal showcase for which musicians & celebs truly know how to cut loose and enjoy, ya know, uh, live music - and which… well. 🤐.
Points to FLAVA FLAV who enjoyed himself the most during the fantastic “Higher Ground” STEVE WONDER / CHRIS STAPLETON collab - also if that song doesn’t make you move, you shouldn’t get invited back to THE GRAMMYS next year.
👏: Chris Martin gets The Wakeup Dress Comfortable fashion award for the evening.
Here’s your GRAMMY winner list. Kudos to Trevor Noah on another great job as host, and to BEYONCE, HARRY STYLES and… BONNIE RAITT on their big wins. GRAMMY surprises are always fun to watch.
SPEAKING OF: How many people do you think watched the show? They got about 9 Million viewers the last 2 years, prior to that the show was doing about 19 Million in the last 3 pre-covid years. Let’s have Taylor set the bar.
PLUS: AMAZON is joining the SUPER BOWL Ads fray, with an Ad buy this Sunday for the upcoming Damon/Affleck Air Jordan pic “Air”, which goes wide in theaters on April 5… right after MARCH MADNESS. #SmartDate
The game just sold out of Ad slots as of today… again gotta love that Ad market (pre-game still avail). And maybe AMAZON didn’t quite pay $7 Million - as most 30 second Ads sold for between $6 Mil and $7 Mil.
AND: I’m sure you’ve all read this (or saw headlines) but just in case - Armie Hammer speaks… to Graydon Carter’s Air Mail.
THEN: Just a recommended pod listen with WWE CEO Nick Khan and Bill Simmons on the BS Pod from a couple weeks ago that I finally caught up on this weekend - great chat not only with more color on the WWE sale process and a POV on Vince McMahon’s return from the inside, but also a smart Sports business convo in general (starts around the 1hr17min mark).
😯: A rare miss for the Wakeup weekend poll… as 62% took $17 Million-plus on “Knock at the Cabin”. The C Cinemascore probably didn’t help this weekend.
IN TODAY’S EDITION:
Dynamic Movie Theater ticket pricing takes another step forward… as PAR encouraged lower ticket prices in bid to bring back more older moviegoers for “Brady” - a look at this new tactic.
Meet the Christian TV series that’s made more money at the Box Office than any OSCAR Specialty pic this Awards season… as the Specialty market also comes down from its OSCAR high this weekend
AMAZON 2022 content spending nears NETFLIX’s… ish.
