Glen Powell & A24 Fail to Make a ‘Killing’
The hottest star and beloved distributor combined for a whiff
It doesn’t seem like either Glen Powell or A24 had high hopes for Powell’s latest bid as a leading man, How to Make a Killing, but the thriller’s muted opening — $3.6 million in sixth place — definitely seems like a missed opportunity.
“Could you recall seeing marketing or anything for this?” Sean McNulty asks Christopher Rosen on Monday Morning Quarterbacks. “I saw nothing on this.”
A Studio Canal movie that A24 picked up for a reported $5 million, it’s not like How to Make a Killing — a dark comedy about a mega-wealthy family and the black sheep cousin who murders its members to lay claim to its billion-dollar inheritance — is going to be a washout for the distributor. But it’s curious when a movie with stars like Powell and Margaret Qualley is quietly dumped on its way to the streaming afterlife.
“I just don’t think they knew what to do with it,” Chris says.
“Glen Powell is everywhere all the time for whatever project he has,” Sean adds. “This one, however… I don’t know whether it’s oversaturation from The Running Man and Chad Powers last year, but he was everywhere for a while” — but not so much here.
Elsewhere on the episode: Sean and Chris discuss the success of Goat, Wuthering Heights’ strong performance overseas and the upcoming Scream 7, which brings back original writer Kevin Williamson and star Neve Campbell for a new entry in the long-running horror franchise.
