☀️ TWITTER loses hundreds more employees🫡, locks offices as the disaster deepens
AMAZON sets Sony Spidey TV deal / Spielberg, Bradley Cooper team up at WB / MORNING BREW Ad pullback leads to some layoffs
Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect here on LINKED-IN if ya like) and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on FRIDAY November 18, 2022.
Where the day has finally arrived… you can feel the electricity… even more than seeing it (well, more than usual) - yes, ADELE’s long awaited LAS VEGAS residency finally begins tonight.
So just a warning for repeatedly seeing the same pictures in your Instagram feeds on weekends over the next few months.
AND: TICKETMASTER canceled the TSWIFT tour ticket sale for the general public today because… well, A) see Tuesday’s debacle, B) see A)… as it sounds like it didn’t leave pretty much any tickets left to sell today. She set a one-day record of 2+ Million tickets sold on Tuesday.
ALSO: Michael Lewis of course has the inside track on the scripted film on FTX, but who had VICE MEDIA as the first to announce an FTX docu in the office pool? The Information is partnering on the project according to THR, and it’s slated to deliver Q2 next year (VICE is handling sales).
OH WAIT: Here’s another one, from a docu studio called XTR.
PLUS: It’s just nice when the universe kinda comes together on one day:
Weinstein’s decades of secrets and crimes hits movie theaters
Elizabeth Holmes is sentenced for… secrets and crimes
FTX’s internal secrets (and would-be crimes) are exposed in first Bankruptcy filing. Who knew approving expenses with emojis wasn’t on the up & up?
ALTHOUGH: Having an Accounting department probably would have helped (yes, apparently there was no FTX Accounting department).
EITHER WAY: Elon definitely picked the right week for issuing the worst employee ultimatum in American corporate history.
Friday BOX OFFICE Poll:
FIRST, TO NOTE: The Box Office numbers / “drought” problem is not necessarily that HOLLYWOOD is making fewer movies, it’s that Streamers have gobbled up bigger and bigger projects that previously would have been theatrical ones.
Case in Point: The Theatrical Box Office is losing out on maybe a… $40+ Million opening weekend today (?) if Reynolds & Ferrell were doing “Spirited” at say WB instead of APPLE TV+. Remember this when you’re reading all of the year-end “box office was down xx%” stories in about 6 weeks.
But we do have 2 new entrants, “She Said” and “The Menu”… which will do nowhere near $40 Million. Combined. But:
