There have been bad, even excruciating awards shows before. In fact, one might say excruciating awards shows are almost the rule and when an Oscar night say, is mildly entertaining, the fact is greeted with such shock that critics are all but dancing in the streets. Hollywood has long since let entertainment in these things take a back seat to a whole range of industrial and political interests.
Had you told everybody 5 or 10 years ago that there would be an entire year coming up when virtually nobody in the United States would see a film in a movie theater I can only imagine the op/eds, think pieces, tweets, etc. that would have resulted. Well that scenario just occured and relatively few people seem to care.
All spot on and concisely covering the big issues surrounding awards season. On the matter of a little issue....I'm utterly perplexed when someone gets truly emotional winning a GG. It's one thing if the Academy or SAG (your peers) vote for you but you can actually win a GG with 19 people voting for you (the other 4 nominees each get 17 votes). And those 19 folks who voted for you are the same ones who came to visit you on set who asked you questions like, "Who are you dating?" and then lined up to pose for a photo with you. And if they couldn't make it to set to see you it was because they couldn't get time off from their headwaiter job. Nothing wrong with being gracious and heartfelt when you win a GG but please, no more crying.
