There's a good article in the New Yorker's feed today that pretty much echoes what you say here, Richard, but specifically to the internet and the decline of social media.
Hollywood's problem is that back when it did all those things you pine for, it was independent and owned and run by people who cared about the product. Then it got sold to the intergalactic widget-makers who want a 10% ROI regardless and do not want to hear that Nobody. Knows. Anything.
And so blandblandbland came along. I'm so glad I don't have to work in that crap any more.
