What the EMMY NOMS reveal about the streaming services
New BLACK MIRROR cast additions / MICROSOFT layoffs, GOOGLE slows hiring / YOUTUBE TV now 5th largest TV provider
Mornin! This is Sean McNulty and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on WEDNESDAY July 13, 2022.
Where I can’t quite shake the feeling that “Succession” is still being nominated for something right now…
SO: Here is your EMMYS noms list in case needed.
AND: Richard Rushfield kindly invited me on The Ankler Hot Seat podcast to help break down the Nominations along with the trends in the streaming business behind said Noms, with 2 very smart TV folks:
LA Times Pulitzer-winning longtime TV biz journalist, Mary McNamara
TV comedy writer Rob Long (and host of “The Martini Shot” podcast here)
Here are links to check it out - APPLE and SPOTIFY or here via the site:
AND NOW:
A few brief bigger picture thoughts on what the EMMY Noms indicate… then onto ya know, news.
HBO is still HBO at the EMMYS after all these years, and as strong as ever - taking the most with 108, and 140 when you factor in HBOMAX with it.
HOWEVER: Pairing this with their still baffling decision to pull out of TCA in a few weeks begs the question even more: “What’s about to happen at WBD???” 😯
NETFLIX got 105 Nominations. Zero in any Comedy Series category (although got a few for standup specials).
With its global business model… Comedy has just never seemed to be prioritized outside of standup, or mass produced sitcoms (“The Ranch”, “Fuller House” etc). Supporting a theory that smart comedy just doesn’t seem to travel beyond borders.
HULU had its buzziest year since winning with “The Handmaid’s Tale”, getting 3 of the 5 Limited Series noms and 58 overall. HULU’s brand is as (critically) strong as ever… just as DISNEY needs to begin figuring out what to do with it (and COMCAST).
APPLE TV+ follows up a big OSCARS season with a strong 51 noms (Even though it seems like half of those are Supporting & Guest actor noms for “Ted Lasso”)
PAR+, PEACOCK and DISNEY+ are still non-starters in EMMY world, and AMAZON still is basically “Maisel” or bust.
DIS+ got 34 noms, but none in the ‘traditional’/high profile categories.
AMAZON got 30, but basically a lotta “Maisel”
PAR+: 11 noms, PEACOCK: 3 noms
We need a WHITE LOTUS RULE: Only 2 Actors per series, per category.
Or perhaps add a Cast category like the SAG Awards. I mean all due respect to the performances here, but this is a joke:
SUPPORTING ACTRESS, LIMITED SERIES
Connie Britton “The White Lotus” - HBO
Jennifer Coolidge “The White Lotus” - HBO
Alexandra Daddario “The White Lotus” - HBO
Natasha Rothwell “The White Lotus” - HBO
Sydney Sweeney “The White Lotus” - HBO
Mare Winningham “Dopesick” - HULU
Kaitlyn Dever “Dopesick” - HULU
FAVORITE NOMINATION: “Trent Crimm, The Independent”
THINGS NOT NOMINATED THAT… WERE NOT IN THE HEADLINES YESTERDAY:
