How about this for a Valentine’s Day gift? Today’s extra episode of the Prestige Junkie podcast features my interviews with many of this year’s attendees at the Oscar Nominees Luncheon, where our Ankler Studio filmed countless conversations — and I tried to get to the bottom of what it really feels like when you become an Oscar nominee.
Of course, it’s not always an easy question to answer. Raphael Saadiq, now a two-time nominee after his recognition this year for the Sinners original song “I Lied To You,” described the experience as “picking up the love from everywhere.” (Trivia time: Saadiq was first nominated for original song in 2018 for a track from Mudbound.) Best actress nominee Rose Byrne (If I Had Legs I’d Kick You) compared the luncheon to college orientation — “It’s like, who do I get to speak to? What do I get to talk about?” Even costume design nominee Ruth E. Carter, already a two-time Oscar winner, said it was a different experience this go-around, with so many of her Sinners colleagues nominated as well.
“My costume doesn’t come alive until it’s lit, until it’s standing on a set, until it has props and it’s being directed and it’s worn by actors,” Carter told me on today’s episode. “So to be separated from it and get a nomination for it is a great honor, but it’s missing the other elements that come with it.”
You’ll hear from 16 Oscar nominees on today’s episode, and for even more from the luncheon — including longer interviews with stars like Amy Madigan and Stellan Skarsgård — check out The Ankler’s YouTube page. Plus, if you want to know what really happened inside the Beverly Hilton on Tuesday — from Steven Spielberg stopping people in their tracks to the warm hug between Teyana Taylor and Jacob Elordi — subscribe to Prestige Junkie After Party, where I talked all about it with Vanity Fair’s Rebecca Ford.
