More spec market 🔥 / PEOPLE’s next big layoff / NHL returns strong on ESPN
Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LINKEDIN here if ya like or email me at seanmcnultynyc@gmail.com), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on Friday, October 10, 2025.
Where the GIANTS actually beat the defending Super Bowl champion EAGLES on TNF last night 🤯, and as I watched the game in L.A. — I may need to return more often to the West Coast this season to watch GIANTS games.
A tough night overall, Philly — although, uh, it has been 14 years since any NYC-area “big 4” sports team has won a championship (oddly enough, the GIANTS won the last one in 2011). Thankfully, at least the WNBA’s NY LIBERTY gave us some pride last year.
THEN: You know it’s tough out there for the linear TV business when the PARENTS TELEVISION COUNCIL, which had a long history of filing government complaints against linear TV content for 3 decades, has filed for bankruptcy.
AND: Here’s your lineup for the NYC DOC festival, starting on Nov. 12.
PLUS: Longtime phone app-only INSTAGRAM is “exploring” the creation of a TV app according to IG leader Adam Mosseri at the Bloomberg Screentime event yesterday . . . which unfortunately did not take place in the year 2021, the year after it launched Reels (YOUTUBE launched its TV app in 2017, fwiw).
To his credit, Mosseri did fully acknowledge that not doing this earlier was “a mistake though on my part.”
INSTA just released an iPad app . . . last month.
AH: AMAZON’s $40M Melania Trump “documentary” will be released in movie theaters on Jan. 30. DISNEYFOX’s Sam Raimi pic Send Help with Rachel McAdams is its major studio competition.
The doc will also have an accompanying 3-part docuseries on AMAZON PV . . . for some reason. No date for that one yet.
OH: Your latest example of America’s growing “two economies” system, DELTA projects that revenue from its “luxury” seats will surpass economy seat revenue for the year in 2027 — DELTA’s prez on the latest earnings call: “Much of our growth, if not all of it, will be in the premium sectors.”
KUDOS: To one of those economies, which is now celebrating a 3-year bull market run (ex. April’s #TrumpTariff “fun”). And as we all know, bull markets never end.
ALSO: OPENAI expanded the availability of its lower-cost CHATGPT GO to 16 more APAC countries, including the highly populated countries of India and Indonesia, where it’s available at a far lower price of $4.50 a month.
GO is not available in the U.S. — it’s either free or $20 a month.
YAH: KALSHI had over $1B of trading volume across all of its wagers predictions markets last week alone, and is on target for $50B on an annualized basis — that’s up from $300M in annualized volume for 2024 (pre-election).
It recently raised over $300M at a $5B valuation, according to the NY Times; that’s up from a $2B valuation just 4 months ago.
It’s also opening its
wageringpredicting markets to be available in 140 markets globally.I’ve yet to see any data on the company’s profitability from all of this action, although it is clearly a dramatically growing business.
WELL: Here is your latest major consumer American brand refresh — don’t tell MAGA that Uncle Hershel isn’t in this one either (at least DOMINO’S is still sticking with selling pizza).
FINALLY: A sad moment for college hoops fans, as a staple presence of March Madness for many years, Sister Jean of LOYOLA UNIVERSITY CHICAGO, has died at the age of 106.
WAKEUP BOX OFFICE POLL
I was 🤏 from joining the Tron: Ares bears this weekend, but I think the bad weekend weather on the East Coast might help this movie a little bit . . . although, I’m not very high above $36M.
NEW POD
THANKS!
To the Bloomberg folks for the invite to come hang for another great Screentime conference in L.A. this week — and great to meet and see many readers of the newsletter IRL too!
PLUS: A kudos to Breaker Media’s Lachlan Cartwright for adding a little fun back to the NYC media world with a party on the East Coast Tuesday night, that was neither a Breaker launch party . . . nor a 1-year anniversary shindig, but maybe a new season of the podcast party? Regardless — a cheers to Lachlan on a . . . I think now 8 months of Breaker Media! 🍸
