☀️ WB's Big New Movie Deals As Stock Hits Record Low
'Rebel Moon 2' week two 👎 / What AMAZON actually said re: PRIME VIDEO ads 💰 / SIRIUSXM's bumpy D2C rollout
Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LinkedIn here if ya like), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on WEDNESDAY, May 1, 2024.
Where hey it’s May! A year ago today, we were preparing for a little strike that was set to begin tomorrow. Eh, good thing the studios made a deal.
Think about it — the effects of a significant work stoppage last year could have been felt throughout the entire next year . . . and sunk the great momentum that the movie business had coming out of the pandemic, which nearly ended the industry as a going concern.
Whew . . . I mean, that would have just been dumb business.
AND: Tribeca has set some fun conversations for next month, including a Sopranos reunion as part of an Alex Gibney-directed HBO doc about the show. Judd Apatow, Kerry Washington and Kieran Culkin are among the stars doing chats, and Footloose will be screening with a Kevin Bacon interview to follow, and Sugarland Express will do the same with Spielberg.
Single tickets for events are also now on sale here.
ALSO: A group of ALDEN GLOBAL PE-backed newspapers (incl. NY Daily News and Chicago Tribune) is suing MICROSOFT and OPENAI for copyright infringement, joining the NY Times in the lawsuit front, vs. the dealmaking front that other publishers (AP, FT) have taken.
They’re also citing reputational damage according to Axios, saying ChatGPT said that “the Denver Post published research and medical observations that smoking can be a cure for asthma.”
HUH: CONDE NAST now produces more than 235 original digital video series. Although Jack Dorsey sounds a little worried about the editorial direction of one of its publications.
NOW: This is how you get movie premiere publicity, ⛳️👏 UNI.
