Evenin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LINKEDIN here if ya like or email me at seanmcnultynyc@gmail.com), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on SUNDAY, May 18, 2025.
Where I’m adding bridge reporting to my mandate here at The Wakeup — and thankfully / shockingly you really can’t see a thing on the Brooklyn Bridge today from last night’s scary ship incident (can you imagine driving across the bridge while that was happening?)
The old Mexican warship though . . . oof.
BUT: KNICKS fans — be careful with another NYC treasure! 😳 Kudos to whoever was in the car with Timmy to pull him back in from his celebratory instincts after the big win over the CELTICS on Friday — a real man of the people! Well, except for where his seats are for KNICKS games.
THEN: Foo Fighters have split with drummer Josh Freese after 2 years. He stepped in after the death of Taylor Hawkins.
AND: Scott Galloway had a great weekend column on the state of U.S. healthcare in light of Trump’s weak proclamation on lowering drug prices earlier this month.
AH: As . . . pretty much anyone could have predicted — folks are now using AI to impersonate the voices of senior U.S. government officials on the phone to their subordinates. So uh, yeah . . . just know that the next time I get a call complaining about something in the newsletter, I’m just going to assume it’s AI.
OH: Nothing like the President of the United States (and renown dermatological expert) dishing out skincare assessments to Bruce Springsteen, while seemingly threatening the U.S. citizen’s re-entry to the country. What a statesman.
“This dried out ‘prune’ of a rocker (his skin is all atrophied!) ought to KEEP HIS MOUTH SHUT until he gets back into the Country, that’s just ‘standard fare’. Then we’ll all see how it goes for him!”
WAKEUP POLL
Kudos to the 31% Final Destination: Bloodlines bulls!
FINALLY: The Wakeup is coming to you a little earlier than usual for the Sunday P.M. edition as I’m off to say farewell to Ethan Hunt this evening.
Although I’m actually a 🤏 bummed to be missing the 60 Minutes finale tonight — so I’ll just put a shout out here now . . . which looks like 3 good ones on China spies, the mess at the IRS and the future of robotic warfare. Hopefully my VCR doesn’t mess up the recording. 🤞
But, let’s round out here up top with the joke swap season-ending tradition at SNL, with a special Scarlett Johansson appearance . . . and I was kinda hoping she would be given a chance to read some jokes to dunk on Che, but this was still pretty good.
