Hollywood hollows out as productions leave L.A. to shoot and what streaming has to do with it
Sean McNulty (00:04):
Welcome to The Ankler Podcast. This is Sean McNulty of The Wakeup newsletter here at The Ankler, here on the Jersey Shore on Thursday, September 5th. I'm joined in Los Angeles by Elaine Low, as always, and Richard Rushfield up in Toronto. Richard, it's totally fine. I said you can skip this week's podcast if you want to get to whatever movie theater, you don't know where you're going to yet, but, Elaine, Richard insisted on joining so we could hear your picks for the winners of the US Open this weekend. So he insisted to join for this.
Elaine Low (00:34):
Well, I am so honored that you would join all the way from Toronto for that, Richard.
Richard Rushfield (00:38):
People are stopping me on the street...
Sean McNulty (00:39):
He needs the info. He needs the intel.
Richard Rushfield (00:42):
… asking me, "Does Elaine think Bjorn Borg is...
Sean McNulty (00:46):
Oh boy.
Richard Rushfield (00:46):
... going to take it this year?"
Elaine Low (00:47):
That's it. Bjorn Borg.
Richard Rushfield (00:49):
Is Jimmy Connors…
Elaine Low (00:51):
Him and Johnny Mac. That's who it's going to be this weekend.
Sean McNulty (00:53):
Johnny Mac. Yeah, exactly. Well, Elaine will give us all of her tennis insights in a little bit, I guarantee you. She wrote a great piece about the burgeoning LA tennis scene, which we'll dive into in a little bit. Been a busy couple of days here for a holiday week. A few things to dive into. All DirecTV customers, of course, are currently without the US Open. Elaine and I will dive into what's afoot there in a little bit, and Ashley Cullins is going to join us as well to talk a bit about the LA production exodus that's been going on and what lies ahead there. But Richard, you are at the Hollywood east epicenter this week. What's on the big TIFF agenda? The festival starts today. We're recording on Thursday, so nothing's really happened yet, but what do you got going on, Richard?
Richard Rushfield (01:35):
Yeah, I'm off in Canada, ay.
Sean McNulty (01:39):
You're already blending, Richard, very good.
Richard Rushfield (01:41):
That's right. Take off, you hoser.
Sean McNulty (01:46):
That suits you very well actually.
Elaine Low (01:47):
How many Canadians are you planning on offending today, Richard?
Sean McNulty (01:49):
Yeah, Canadians, we apologize in advance for Richard's presence in Toronto.
Richard Rushfield (01:54):
Canadians don't get offended there.
Sean McNulty (01:56):
That is true. There you go.
Richard Rushfield (01:57):
They're very well-mannered...
Sean McNulty (01:58):
Richard's tried very hard. Yeah.
Richard Rushfield (02:01):
... Sober people. I am here. The Nobu Hotel has just opened.
Sean McNulty (02:07):
Oh, there's a hotel too.
Richard Rushfield (02:10):
They've opened a whole hotel. There's a documentary on him and a hotel both opening up this weekend. I am planning to attend many receptions within the Nobu Hotel.
Sean McNulty (02:22):
Oh, is that the place to be this week this weekend, Richard?
Richard Rushfield (02:25):
Apparently this is where everyone is throwing their parties. So looking forward to the film and looking forward to the hor d'oeuvres.
Sean McNulty (02:32):
Well, clearly, clearly, as we're looking forward to your hor d'oeuvres and buffet report, which I'm sure you'll be doing. What's on the film agenda? Anything you're particularly excited about, Richard?
