I have a friend who has a house, and he's been working on his house, and told his contractor that he wanted one of those things that automatically shuts off the gas in the case of an earthquake. When the earth shakes, it can shake loose the gas mains, and then the whole house can go up in flames, so best to have one of those gadgets in place to prevent that.
Why do you want to prevent that, his contractor asked. If an earthquake destroys your house, your earthquake insurance kicks in and all of those policies have huge deductibles. But your fire insurance covers the whole house.
So I'm better off if my house burns down, my friend told me. That's what I'm hoping for.
