Transcript: Hollywood's Disappearing ATM Machine
Cable TV was the golden goose that bankrolled streaming. What went wrong so fast and its role in the writers' revolt
Sean McNulty (00:05):
Hey everybody. Welcome to The Ankler Podcast. This is Sean McNulty from The Wakeup Newsletter here at The Ankler, here in New York City, on the morning of Friday, May 19th. Joining me as always our Richard Rushfield and Elaine Low. Elaine. Freshly back in LA after a whirlwind Upfronts trip. Did you eat better at CinemaCon or Upfronts Elaine? You've had two big trips here in the past few weeks.
Elaine Low(00:28):
Well, given that my diet at CinemaCon was 80 percent candy from the trade show floor, I'm going to say New York. I'm going to say New York.
Sean McNulty (00:35):
Certainly, well, those donut holes at WBD, you got to be careful. But you did eat though, right? Because some of those days I've gone, at those conferences where you're like, "I literally had coffee and a free bagel, and that was my diet today."
Elaine Low(00:47):
Oh, there was one day, I think it might've been Disney's day, where my first real meal of the day literally came at 11:30 p.m., because I'd been subsisting on granola bars and coffee all day.
Sean McNulty (00:57):
It's tough when you're jetting around New York City and you, yeah, just have those finger foods around you. And like, "I had no actual meal today."
Elaine Low(01:04):
Hey, just trying to save The Ankler some money, man.
Sean McNulty (01:07):
That's exactly right. She's on the case, Richard, don't worry about it. There we go. And remember, of course, to first, follow The Ankler on all social platforms, @TheAnkler, and of course, you can subscribe and we encourage you to do so to The Ankler at theankler.com and get the full suite of newsletters and podcasts. And of course, Elaine was jetting around New York for The Ankler's Strikegeist newsletter, which is totally free. And that includes her daily roundup of strike news, strike negotiations, as well as the posts from the larger Ankler team there. You can get that at strikegeist.com.

So starting with the upfront here, Elaine, so essentially, it was the news and sports upfront, I think, we'll start with the business side of it first. What was your general takeaway from three or three days of non-stop presentations.
