Hollywood is easy. Politics are hard. But both are stuck playing to the fringe

Around here, real estate salespeople like to refer to certain things as "adjacent" — usually to a pricier or more desirable neighborhood. So they'll sell houses that they call "Beverly Hills adjacent" or "ocean-view adjacent" or "freeway close" — and that's sort of what I'm about to do here. I am not talking about politics — haven't we all had enough of that? Instead, I'm talking about something that's politics adjacent.
I once had a meeting with a former movie star to try to convince him to agree to be in a television show I was producing. The tricky thing was, he didn’t know he was a former movie star. He thought he was a current movie star.
