Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect here on LINKED-IN if ya like) and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on FRIDAY Aug 18, 2023.
Where let’s go poolside roof deck to have our Friday Morning Coffee ☕️ today, and top & tail the week here at The Wakeup with a side of Dave Portnoy (really wish there was a Trading Places “$1” gif at times like these).
According to the NY Post, the new, old owner of BARSTOOL SPORTS (and Ed Sheeran concertgoer) recently cut the price of his Hamptons home by $2.5 Million - so these ocean views are available for a bargain-basement price of $10.5 Million!
Richard, wanna go halvsies? You can even have 3 of the 5 bedrooms. #AnklerEastSummerHeadquarters
AND: The WGA & AMPTP have met for the past 3 days, and the Studio poobah’s (to borrow a Rushfield-ism) are having their 1-900-FCF-HUGE conference call today to go over the progress. If you get asked for a meeting passcode, it’s #fuckem… err I mean #382536 😬.
THEN: US interest in the Women’s WORLD CUP may be categorized as “mild” at this point, but kudos to the AUSTRALIA team who drew the biggest TV audience in AU ever, peaking at 11.1 Million people tuning into the SEVEN NETWORK for the team’s semi-final loss to ENGLAND, or about half of the country’s population and a 90 share 🤯.
It averaged 7.1 Million for the match, plus about 1 Million people who watched on (legal) Streaming.
ALSO: HOLLYWOOD still isn’t making much progress in diversity on-camera in movies - details from the new US Annenberg Inclusion Initiative study are out, which has looked at it through the lens of the top 100 movies since 2007.
PLUS: Yes, Suits is the #1 Streaming show in America again for the 3rd straight week on the NIELSEN Streaming chart, and again it has set a new high-water mark with 3.9 Billion minutes streamed on NETFLIX US for the week of July 17-23 (oh and on PEACOCK too 👋).
That’s up from 3.7 Bil the previous week (July 10-17).

So yes, expect this headline to continue to some degree through mid-September… but this about does it for me - I think we all get it, and this was the last corresponding week that the show charted globally on NETFLIX.
Always nice to have the indicators in advance no?

Just how much original output are the various Streamers putting out in context to each other right now?
How the strategies vary widely.
Yes, losses are an important metric… but so is having a north start to work toward. Or not having one.
And… a real consideration & look at what APPLE is doing this year with their break-the-bank spending spree of 2023 (well, if that bank belonged to anyone other than APPLE)
