☀️The NETFLIX Password Crackdown - How will Sub #s shake out
JLO sets 2023 NETFLIX Films views record / SAG strike threat hits Indie Film insurer / COMCAST's new cheap Streaming bundle
Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LinkedIn here if ya like), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on WEDNESDAY May 24, 2023.
Where the winner of the first day of MAX is… the Social Media Manager at PEACOCK. ⛳️👏
ALTHOUGH: The Studio Streamers definitely found some cash lying around the couch cushions, as MAX and DIS+ were heavily promoted (with a splash of PAR+) in Ad buys during The Voice live finale last night (i.e. the last major Entertainment ratings event for… a long time). However I don’t recall anything for PEACOCK oddly - eh they had the tweet, they’re good.
ALSO: The MTV Music Awards are coming back to downtown Newark, NJ! The date is Tuesday Sept 12 at 8p - apologies to their Ridiculousness viewers, whose regularly scheduled programming will be interrupted. Although heck - why not simulcast it on CBS at that point?
We’ll see if musicians express any solidarity with writers (if we’re still in the situation we’re in now - a very real possibility as Richard put forth yesterday at The Ankler).
PLUS: In case there was any doubt, the US Surgeon General said Social Media is a threat to the mental health of children & teens. Damn. It feels like we just got them off the cigarettes 🤦♂️! (at least the ones you didn’t need to plug in)
This follows a similar sentiment from the American Psychological Association, and here’s just one stat to consider:
3 hours a day on Social Media can 2X the risk of experiencing depression and anxiety for teens.
A survey shows they spend an average of 3.5 hours a day on various Social Media platforms.
Oh remember when Zuck & Mosseri thought it was a good idea to create an INSTAGRAM for Kids? That was fun.
IN TODAY’S EDITION:

COMCAST puts together a $20 TV bundle for their Broadband subs, with a heavy “lifestyle” network skew.
Top indie film Insurer pulls out of Joaquin Phoenix pic due to SAG-AFTRA strike threat.
AMAZON installs an MGM+ Global Growth head, and more.
🪧 STRIKE UPDATES
A writer on HULU’s Woke said the residuals check for the episode she wrote of that series was just 1/3 of the residuals check she got for writing one episode of ABC’s Queens in the same year. /Reuters
