☀️The NETFLIX Films 2023 List - What Dominated, What Missed
New projects for Taylor Sheridan, Michael B. Jordan / Big exit in int'l film world / WBD leans more into TNT Sports branding
Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect here on LINKED-IN if ya like) and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on FRIDAY Jan. 19, 2023.
Where Jimmy Fallon taking Green Day down into the NYC subway system in disguise (temporarily) to play some songs at the Rockefeller Center stop is a fun way to start a weekend.
It also shows the power and fun of “songs everyone knows” (made with real instruments!), as evidenced by the impromptu singalong by people of various ages and backgrounds.
AND: WBD will hold its Upfront on Wed May. 15 at 10 a.m. at THE THEATER at MSG. YOUTUBE is the same day at 6 p.m.
PLUS: Canadians can now get a bundle of NETFLIX, AMAZON PRIME and DIS+ ad tiers for $15 a month from mobile service provider TELUS. I mean come for the ice fishing and maple syrup, stay for the binge discount.
A SUNDANCE GREETING: From these two fine Ankler folks hitting the streets and finer establishments of Park City this weekend - say hello if you see them out and about! Or stuck in a snow bank.
ALT TAKE: Peter and Richard have been cast in a new buddy cop show for the ABC fall schedule. Peter’s the new hotshot detective on the beat who was just transferred from another precinct… and Richard is the veteran who has just one more year til his pension kicks in… and he gets this guy as his new partner 🤦♂️.
What do we call it? 🤔 Open to series names as this is what many of you readers do for a living - seanmcnultynyc@gmail.com
Winner gets a free coffee if you’re ever in Queens or the Jersey Shore!
NEW ANKLER PODCAST EPISODE
Ok so… it seems there was bit of a gremlin in the podcast machine (that’s a thing right?) early this morning, so if you got last week’s episode in your feed this morning by mistake - just delete it and the new, correct episode should be added momentarily.
📋 NETFLIX FILMS Year in Review
Yes, the end of 2023 huge NETFLIX data dump was great… but if “Wow! Did you know The Mother was a huge hit!?” was news to you in uh, December - your cocktail conversation needs a refresher, Cousin Greg.
While I update you each week on how NETFLIX Films (and licensed studio films) are doing on the world’s most popular streaming platform - it’s time to zoom out and give the big picture 2023 vantage point on the year in NETFLIX FILMS… now that all numbers are in.
Int’l vs. U.S…. total view comps YoY… movies with greatest word of mouth bumps… what global regions have the films with the widest appeal… how SONY films stacked up, and much more.
Plus, good news America - despite the popular talking point of international inroads being made on ‘content'… the world still loves American movies most, by far.
