Production and costume design came together to create the vivid and singular world of Barbie as imagined by Greta Gerwig. Academy Award Nominees Sarah Greenwood, Katie Spencer and Jacqueline Durran sit down to discuss the “rules” of the Barbie universe that they put in place with Gerwig that helped lay the foundation for the intricate details that would bring her vision of Barbie to life. The group reflect on early brainstorming sessions with their writer/director, trying to answer the question “how children play” and “what it means to be a toy.” Watch as they talk about the intricate details down to the perfect scale of sets, texture of cloth and shades of pink that went into realizing Gerwig’s authentically artificial version of Barbie’s world.
