The Job Files: Netflix and NBCU
This week I analyze listings at today's top streamer and studio to see what they reveal about hiring
]
This is my third look at the job market at the studios and streamers. My first installment looked at the career fields still growing in Hollywood; my second analyzed current job postings at Disney, WBD and Amazon.
Almost three months into 2024, the job market has yet to fulfill the hope people had for it after the writers and actors strikes ended and the industry kicked back into gear. I’ve heard from crew members, studio staffers and showrunners in recent weeks who’ve been demoralized about the state of things.
Rather than merely wallow in despair about something that isn’t there, I continue to try to figure out who is hiring — and for which roles. Last week I took a look at Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery and Amazon as part of our ongoing examination of the current hiring environment in Hollywood. There, technology positions, entry-level jobs and internships dominated the listings of the legacy studios’ job boards, while Amazon was looking for a few creative executives.
This week, let’s take a gander at arguably the two healthiest studios in town: streaming giant Netflix and NBCUniversal, which is still basking in the glow of Oppenheimer’s seven Academy Awards and its studio topping the 2023 box-office rankings. And NBC is still actually buying scripted series pilots. As before, I started my search in the greater Los Angeles area, though as you’ll see, some of the most promising opportunities would require a move.
In this issue, we’ll cover:
Netflix’s hiring priorities (hint: grab your controller)
The one thing Netflix has in common with its traditional studio rivals
How Netflix’s internationalized production is influencing its creative hiring
Why you have to dig for the gold in NBCUniversal’s open positions
