🎧 'That's the Dream': TV's Top Cinematographers On Director 'Synergy'
Emmy nominees Dana Gonzales, ASC (FX's 'Fargo'), Richard Rutkowski, ASC (Apple TV+'s 'Sugar') and Gary Baum, ASC (Paramount+'s 'Frasier') in conversation with Nicole Hirsch Whitaker, ASC
Welcome to the latest episode of Art & Crafts, The Ankler’s podcast series dedicated to bringing audiences behind the scenes to examine the careers and contributions of the talented artisans who create and craft the movies and TV series that we love. Subscribe on Apple Podcasts.
The three directors of photography featured on The Ankler’s newest Art & Crafts podcast won’t be competing against one another at the Emmys, but one of them will be competing against himself. That would be Gary Baum, ASC, who’s a double nominee — for Paramount+ and CBS Studios’ Frasier reboot and Hulu’s How I Met Your Father — in the category of outstanding cinematography for a multi-camera series (half-hour).
In a lively conversation moderated by Nicole Hirsch Whitaker, ASC (whose credits include Netflix’s One Piece), Baum compared notes with Dana Gonzales, ASC, of FX’s limited series Fargo and Richard Rutkowski, ASC, of Apple TV+’s single-camera series Sugar. The three veterans retraced their career paths, revealed their aesthetic inspirations (and favorite cameras) and highlighted the importance of aligning with a director who shares your vision and ambition.
“You want to meet people that you could stay and make films with for the rest of your life,” Gonzales said. “Whatever you can do to create that kind of energy and synergy and shorthand, you're going to excel, and that's the dream.”
It all went down on August 1 at the American Cinematographers Society Clubhouse in Los Angeles, where The Ankler hosted its first-ever Art & Crafts Live event, the newest evolution of our behind-the-scenes podcast series. More than 120 Hollywood insiders turned out for four panel discussions about just what it takes to make compelling, enduring TV.
Listen up to these three top lensmen, and tune in this week and next to hear from more Emmy-nominated artisans in production design, sound and costume design.
