☀️Tale of 2 UNIs: MARIO astounds again... as RENFIELD bleeds red ink
Eastwood sets up next pic at WB / AMC+ going Ad-tier / Tessa Thompson set to lead ORION pic at MGM
Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LinkedIn here if ya like), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on MONDAY April 17, 2023.
Where the start of NETFLIX’s Love is Blind reunion was delayed for over an hour last night, and eventually they just had to uh… tape it and will upload it today at 3p ET (that note is for one very unhappy Ankler staffer. You know Richard and his dating reality shows 🙄).
I’m thinking 2 days before one’s earnings call is probably not ideal timing for your 2nd live-streaming event to crap out #ChrisRock>LoveIsBlind. Although I guess now we know why the NETFLIX Earnings Call is always pre-taped too 🤷♂️.
Either way - you know it’s bad when even BLOCKBUSTER feels emboldened to get into the fray - seems like they still haven’t forgotten that you canceled their show after 1 season NETFLIX 😬.
AND: On the other side of the spectrum… a little inspirational viewing from my weekend via CBS Sunday Morning about medical debt - granted a pretty sad topic in our country, but this was about some debt-market professionals putting their professional know-how to work to help folks get out of burdensome medical debt. Great end to this piece - and a reminder that good deeds are seen… even if you don’t realize it.
PLUS: Get those final WGA Strike votes in, deadline ends today.
ALSO: Things are getting real for the BE REAL app - daily users are -61% from their peak in the Fall according to Apptopia, falling to 6 Million in March, as GenZ realizes they’re… all pretty much just on their laptops all the time at any given point in the day.
AN OOPS 🤦♂️ AND AN OOOF - Genius McGee here forgot to update the Wakeup Box Office Poll results Friday morning before hitting send (blame the INDIA streaming business), but ya’ll were way off anyway…
84% picked Renfield to come out on top this weekend over Pope’s Exorcist. Well I’m sure UNI at least appreciated your support, if not your ticket purchases apparently.
IN TODAY’S EDITION:
All about the Box Office today, as Mario solidifies its status as the movie to beat in 2023, which considering the grosses on Renfield is a good thing for UNI. Specialty market continues to be a mixed bag by far.
PLUS: BING is making a play for GOOGLE’s multi-Billion dollar search-default deals with electronics manufacturers, AMC+ is joining the Ad-tier fray and more.
