SUBSTACK LIVE: Taylor Swift, Theaters & the Cultural Event of the Year
You're invited as Katey Rich, Christopher Rosen and Like & Subscribe’s Natalie Jarvey join other top voices to mark the monoculture’s last stand
Once, you could walk into work knowing everyone had watched Friends the night before or lined up to see Titanic the past weekend. Now, our cultural silos have never been more entrenched, divvied up by a convoluted confection of algorithms and noise.
Except, that is, for one remaining star: Taylor Swift, whose new album — The Life of a Showgirl — arrives Friday and will command the kind of collective attention of which the rest of the media and entertainment world can only dream.
As part of a week-long series of Taylor Swift album events happening on Substack, creators from across culture, music, sports and beyond are coming together to share their takes on the most significant cultural moment of the year. Joining in on the fun will be Prestige Junkie author Katey Rich, Ankler Media deputy editor Christopher Rosen and Like & Subscribe author Natalie Jarvey — donning their Eras Tour merch and all (well, maybe).
First up, on Thursday at 9 a.m. PT/12 p.m. ET, Natalie will go live with Ochuko Akpovbovbo to discuss Taylor Swift’s Internet Takeover: Digital Marketing Genius or Generational Divide? They’ll dig into how Swift continues to shape digital strategy, media and culture — and what her latest moves tell us about the internet today.
Then, on Friday at 7 a.m. PT/10 a.m. ET, Katey & Chris will join the great Hunter Harris to talk about what Swift’s new album means for her cinematic ambitions. Together, they’ll delve into how Swift utilizes hype to influence culture (and movie ticket sales), her unexpected role as a champion for theatrical releases and why the Oscars still feel like her unexplored frontier.
