What the DIRECTV deal means for Hollywood / AMAZON gets more ‘Reacher’ / LGF asks for voluntary exits
Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LinkedIn here if ya like or email me at seanmcnultynyc@gmail.com), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on TUESDAY, October 1, 2024.
Where somehow . . . it’s now the 4th quarter, folks! Time to get real about making those numbers for the year.
Although a dockworkers strike of 45k East and Gulf coast workers is now in effect, costing the economy anywhere from about $4B a day to $7.5B a week depending on your preferred estimate, although many importer-exporters have already made alternate shipping plans — West Coast docks workers are unaffected — but obviously uh, perishable goods like food will become an issue.
But at least there’s still fall baseball 🍁 — which comes with a sentence that frankly I’m surprised to be writing myself: congrats to the METS on coming through yesterday in the clutch to make the ⚾️ playoffs! They begin today at 2:30 p.m. on ABC and continue on ESPN.
Although my personal tip of the cap 🧢 goes to CUBS outfielder Ian Happ, who bought all of the fans in the Wrigley Field left field bleachers a round of beers as thanks for the support this season. 👏
AND: If you read all of the “This is a f’in disaster” Oasis reunion tour ticket sales stories from the U.K. and thought, “Man, I wish we had that here” — good news! The guys are bringing it on down to the U.S. just under a year from now/Aug. 2025 for NYC/TOR/CHI/LA dates — tix on sale Friday.
THEN: Congrats to this year’s crop of AMPAS Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting winners, selected from 5,500 entrants. 2 of the 5 winning scripts aren’t even from L.A. or NYC!
OH: X’s value was marked down . . . again, as FIDELITY now estimates its initial investment is worth -79% vs. when when Elon took it over. But just think of the great PR gained by being associated with it!
PLUS: ABC added Lainey Wilson as a co-host for the CMAs in November, alongside returning hosts Luke Bryan and noted Country star, Peyton Manning.
ALSO: Sing Sing actor JJ Velasquez was exonerated of the murder conviction that put him behind bars for 23 years, due to newly discovered evidence.
REST IN PEACE: A trio of names were lost yesterday:
MLB legend Pete Rose passed away at 83 — no cause of death was given. HBO just did a docuseries looking at his life and controversial career that’s worth a look.
Broadway star Gavin Creel (Waitress, Hello Dolly!), 48, was lost to a rare nerve cell cancer that he was only diagnosed with in July.
Former NBA star and noted TV pitchman / league ambassador Dikembe Mutombo died at 58, after a 2-year battle with brain cancer.
PLUS: It’s #GetAJobTuesdays! A lotta new job openings down below today, ranging from exec jobs at PEACOCK, YOUTUBE and TIKTOK . . . to some great assistant gigs at CAA, FIFTH SEASON and WB PICTURES and many more.
PROGRAMMING NOTE: Richard's column will appear Wednesday, not today.
