☀️'Inside Out 2' pulls a 'Barbie,' Decimates Tracking
NBA, NHL game 3 audiences dip / May indie film box office roundup / NBC ups comedy series order
Evenin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LinkedIn here if ya like), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on SUNDAY, June 16, 2024.
Where let’s start by sending a Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there today, but remember — don’t bring grandpa to MCDONALD’S . . . the McFlurry is for grandmas-only.
Over on the golf course today, LIV player Bryson DeChambeau won his second U.S. Open.
Gotta love the “U.S.A! U.S.A.!” chants from Bryson’s fanbase as runner-up Rory McIlroy finished up his last putt. Anyone want to remind them who’s paying Bryson his $125M LIV contract?
But, Bryson takes home a nice $4.3M check for his efforts over the past four days from the still U.S.-based PGA tournament along with the trophy.
AND: Charles Barkley says he is gonna call it a day from NBA broadcasting after the next NBA season (ending May/June 2025) — so, no talent bidding war if indeed the NBA games leave TNT/WBD. But, we’ll see if it lasts — have a hard time seeing Chuck sit out hoops entirely. (Maybe just March Madness?)
OK BOOMER: Nothing says, “We know what the next generation of filmgoers wants 🤝” like yet again dipping back into the . . . early ‘80s film IP well for your latest film project.
Add An Officer and a Gentleman at PAR with Miles Teller to The Great 2024 Remake List, on top of already announced projects like Outrageous Fortune and Heaven Can Wait (and numerous others).
3 movies alone whose titles will get roughly the same collective “WTF are you talking about?” reaction from almost everyone under 45 (at least) — plus it’s always a great idea to remake movies that had very memorable Oscar-nominated performances.
But hey, after the
immense successgreat debacles of remakes like Footloose, War Games, Red Dawn and Flatliners (and others I’ve been able to mentally block out by now) . . . I mean, who can blame Hollywood for incessantly trying this again? 🥴📢 You’re taking the wrong lesson from Top Gun: Maverick everyone! We’ll see how the Beverly Hills Cop 4 scores on Rotten Tomatoes in a couple weeks (studios know that folks still write original screenplays, right?).
GOTTA SAY: Reese’s impression of Kidman is pretty fun.
TONYS NIGHT 🎭: The winners will update here as they’re announced.
WAKEUP BOX OFFICE POLL
Here’s to my fellow 28%’ers! Anyone want to resurface their “PIXAR is over” stories from the past 2-3 years?
📽 THE SILVER SCREEN
Man, it’s really too bad Bob II ruined the PIXAR brand forever by putting movies on DIS+. I’m certainly not defending that move, but more noting how the hyperbole that perhaps followed it is aging (remember that with the box office takes from this May too).
Also worth mentioning — don’t undercount the goodwill here that the strong-legged Elemental run re-established for the brand with fans last summer (its U.S. gross was 5.3x of the opening weekend).
So, combine Inside Out 2 with a very strong hold for Will & Martin in weekend 2 and . . . May? Never heard of it.
This is also good news for next weekend, which will now at least still have major grosses despite not having a major studio release.
I’m still confused as to why Horizon didn’t step up to June 21, vs. going up against A Quiet Place 3 on June 28, but we are where we are.
Here are all the numbers to know from the weekend, as well as what’s next for Will Smith.
