Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LinkedIn here if ya like or email me at seanmcnultynyc@gmail.com), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on TUESDAY, January 28, 2025.
Where isn’t it nice to wake up to a bubble deflating in different business for a change?
Granted, while dumping $1T in stock market value in a day based on a DEEPSEEK product that seems to have far more questions around it than answers is classic Wall Street — it just further demonstrates the huge bubble status AI has in 2025.
Though you gotta love the claims from AI investors about another AI business ripping off a product, ahem 😏, and if my killer new disruptor product was actually using chips that I’m technically not allowed to have — yeah, I might not disclose that either.
So, certainly still just speculation, and a very large “we’ll see” status on the whole shebang (btw, whatever you do — don’t ask DEEPSEEK “What happened in Tiananmen Square in 1989?” or anything about Taiwan).
But, there’s no denying that the timing here with META, MICROSOFT and APPLE all having earnings calls this week is just 🤌. Have fun, fellas!
BUT: NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang, if it makes you feel any better — Larry Ellison technically lost more money on paper yesterday according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index: -$20B vs. -$22B. Meanwhile, I found a quarter on the sidewalk, so things are looking up for this guy! 🤑
OH: Anyone wanna own some of Elon’s X debt? 😲 The big banks who lent him those billions to buy it are now trying to offload them to suckers anyone else — and what better time to get in on the action than when the boss told the X troops this month that “Our user growth is stagnant, revenue is unimpressive, and we’re barely breaking even.”
ALSO: NBC NEWS laid off about 40 folks (roughly 2%) according to BI.
AHA: But count one in the win column for the media lawsuit business — HEARST prevailed in winning a $77M lawsuit brought against Esquire by Devin Nunes . . . from 2019.
PLUS: Alex Cooper is getting her own SIRIUSXM channel.
THEN: NIELSEN will stop selling its panel-only data this Q4, which has been the backbone of the TV business for decades, and instead will focus on offering its new Big Data+Panel product which incorporates data from third parties and streamers in addition to NIELSEN panel data.
AMAZON’s TNF has been reporting both sets of data for a while, and it’s generally added roughly 8%-ish to the audience size each week.
AH: Some advertisers have expressed “concerns” to META about its new content moderation approach . . . or uh, lack of one. And I’m sure they’ll totally pull their 💰 as a result — see you in the 2025 META earnings reports with new ad revenue records.
AND: If you need any more data reinforcing that streaming services are now the babysitter in America 👇. Yeah I dunno, maybe kids aren’t just being raised on YOUTUBE, after all? (Note: These are not views, but simply sheer tonnage of minutes watched.)
