All of the snow may be east of the Mississippi River, instead of in the mountains of Utah, but the wintry energy of the Sundance Film Festival is still going strong — with starry premieres, bittersweet farewells and even a rumored bidding war highlighting the final edition of the festival in Park City, Utah, before it picks up and moves to Boulder, Colo., next year.
I’m experiencing Sundance from afar once again, though, as you’ll hear when I talk to my colleague Alison Brower on today’s Prestige Junkie podcast, I have managed to catch at least one of the festival’s most talked-about movies. As Alison tells me, direct from Park City, there’s a nice vibe at this year’s edition of Sundance, thanks partly to the star power of the likes of Charli XCX and Olivia Wilde, but also a number of movies that seem likely to enchant audiences beyond the festival, too.
Alison tells me about everything from buzzy debuts to an Alec Baldwin chess match, as well as how the real-world horrors unfolding in Minneapolis have found their way into the festival atmosphere — and how it might foreshadow how Hollywood at large may start to respond. Before I talk to Alison, though, my colleague Christopher Rosen joins for a quick check-in on the Oscar race and the chatter that’s emerged since the nominations were announced last week. Why are Brazilian fans leaving shoe emojis on Instagram posts about Sirāt? Why are so many people watching Sinners? Listen and learn!
For more from Chris and me, as well as our beloved returning guest Joyce Eng, find us all on a new episode of Prestige Junkie After Party this Friday, diving even deeper into the numbers that make the Oscar race run. Subscribe now and see you there!
