NO TIME TO DIE tops QUANTUM OF SOLACE box office, SOHO stumbles
ICE CUBE gives up $9 Million to stay unvaxx'd / WORLD SERIES ratings continue downfall / VENOM 2 at half of VENOM 1 box office
Mornin! This is Sean McNulty and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on MONDAY November 1, 2021.
Where, uh November is here. And the AMERICAN FILM MARKET runs all week which… will likely yield a lot of movie acquisition news. Couple that with PAR+, STARZ, NY TIMES subscriber updates and more earnings reports - well thankfully today is relatively quiet.
So - here’s my morning cereal stock check-in on NETFLIX over the past 3 months, for anyone wondering how Wall Street has viewed the Chappelle controversy’s effect on the business.
ALSO: Brian Cox released an autobiography and… apparently has a lot of problems with you people. #FrankCostanzaStyle Definitely not holding back on folks like Johnny Depp and Tarantino, some choice quotes in the link. /The Big Issue
AND: A congrats to Kal Penn, who announced his engagement to his boyfriend Josh after 11 years together. He also has an autobiography coming out tomorrow.
📽 THE SILVER SCREEN
Cube has declined to get vaxx’d to shoot a comedy with Jack Black called “Oh Hell No”. SONY now searching for replacement for the movie which was to shoot this Winter.
Cube previously publicly championed mask wearing during the pandemic… but now uh, yeah. /THR
ALSO: JON BON JOVI and BRYAN ADAMS both canceled concerts this weekend after both got Covid. Both are vaccinated,. Both are doing fine. So - think they would say it was a good day.
Chris Morgan (“Fast and Furious” movies) is writing the script called “Red One”, but little is known about the concept other than that it may have overt merch tie-ins with AMAZON for Holiday season 2023.
Jake also directed The Rock in “Jumanji”. /THR
“DUNE” : $15.5 Million ($69 Mil US, $292 Million global)
62% drop from opening weekend (kinda par for the course these days). Outside of the HBOMAX thing, it was also the most pirated movie this week according to TORRENT FREAK.
IMAX increased its share of “Dune” box office to 28% this weekend despite only having 10% of “Dune” screens. Although those IMAX screens will all switch to “Eternals” on Friday.
Dropped 75% in CHINA, will finish out with $38 Million there
“HALLOWEEN KILLS : $8.5 Million ($85 Million US)
“NO TIME TO DIE” : $7.8 Million ($133 Million US, $606 Million global)
Tops the 2008 gross of “Quantum of Solace”, not adjusted for inflation.
CHINA opening added $28 million, bigger opening than “Dune”. Although to note - about 15% theaters are closed due to Covid outbreaks there.
“MY HERO ACADEMIA: WORLD HEROES’ MISSION : $6.4 Million
This is an anime movie, the third in an existing series
“VENOM: LET THERE BE CARNAGE” : $6 Million ($190 Million US, $396 Million global)
“Venom” made twice as much at $853 Million global in 2018.
“LAST NIGHT IN SOHO” and “ANTLERS” both made about $4.1 Million in their opening weekends, each from about 3,000 theaters.
“Last Night in Soho” very likely will head to PVOD $20 rental by mid-November as a result.
ALSO: Call this what you will re: the health of the movie theater business post-Covid, but would these films done any better in the 2019 Box Office? eh.
“THE FRENCH DISPATCH” made $2.75 Million from 788 screens. Total is now at $4.2 Million
ALSO IN MOVIES
📺 THE TV SET
The 2020 Covid series of course still holds the lowest ever mantle, but this Series is not far ahead, averaging about 10 Million viewers through the first 3 games.
Game 6 is on Tuesday night - if the BRAVES win, they get the title. /Deadline
💻 THE MEDIA BIZ
It’s gonna be a busy week… so I’m thankful for the break in the action today. Sadly this doesn’t bode well for the GIANTS game tonight.
BUT A BRIEF FOLLOW UP: Crypto.com is spending over $100 Million on their Matt Damon-driven ad campaign that I posted an ad for on Friday. So thinking we’ll see a lot more of Matt especially in expensive January NFL Playoff Game ad breaks.
2 QUICK THINGS
Matthew Perry gets $1 Million advance from FLATIRON BOOKS for autobiography. Or - what he made for working one week on “Friends”.
Media & Hollywood CEO salaries are great… but NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell made $128 Million over the past 2 years.
🏦 STOCK NOTES:
ROKU down 5%
IMAX down 6% negating earnings call gains earlier last week
CHARTER -4.5% due to their slowing Broadband growth news
👩💻 NEW TO WATCH:
ESPN Monday Night Football - GIANTS vs CHIEFS. So the ManningCast on ESPN+ should go up a notch.
IMDB TV “Justice Judy” - JUDGE JUDY’s new court show debuts on streaming, which definitely won’t lead to a lot of calls from older relatives about what something called INGZ TV is, and what channel is it on.
