Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LINKEDIN here if ya like or email me at seanmcnultynyc@gmail.com), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.

Where yeah . . . this won’t be good for AMC’s basement-level theaters at Lincoln Square 😳 (the theater itself re-opened after the Monday deluge in NYC ☔️, but uh, yeah those bottom theaters are gonna be a minute).

But maybe the theater can host a “scent-a-long” screening, run by fragrance subscription company SCENTBIRD, to help mask the mustiness?

The company just did one for tastemakers at the REGAL Union Square for I Know What You Did Last Summer, releasing various thematic scents into the theater throughout the movie, and you haven’t lived until you’ve smelled what a wet fisherman with a penchant for murder smells like.

Alright then, have at it, Philippe! Via Giphy

PLUS: TIFF announced some world premieres — pretty sweet lineup!

  • NETFLIX’s Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery from Rian Johnson

  • APPLE TV+’s The Lost Bus from Paul Greengrass

  • SPC’s The Choral from Nicholas Hytner

  • PAR/MIRAMAX’s Roofman from Derek Cianfrance

  • SEARCHLIGHT’S The Rental Family with Brendan Fraser

  • FOCUS’ Hamnet from Chloe Zhao

THEN: Here are your 2025 Emmy nominees, with HBO / MAX leading the way by a healthy margin — and its biggest total ever (See? Putting HBO back in the name is paying off already!), with APPLE’s Severance getting the most for a single show.

  • Obviously a lot of Hacks vs. Studio talk coming out of the gate yesterday — but uh, 5 Guest Comedy Actor noms from one show . . . 4 for famous folks playing a version of themselves (Bryan Cranston is the lone nominee from The Studio playing a fictional character)? Yeah, this is why I keep pretty 🤐 about all awards seasons.

  • But I was very heartened to see one of my favorite series HBO’s Somebody Somewhere get some recognition with a writing and supporting actor nom (a thank you to Katey Rich’s Prestige Junkie breakdown for the heads up on that one). Ok voters, you won me back over. Maybe Industry can get in there next year, too.

  • NEXT UP: We see how the show does on CBS against the FALCONS / VIKINGS 🏈 SNF game on NBC on Sept. 14 — a very thematic game for anyone who’s watching NETFLIX’S Quarterback this season . . . which apparently isn’t as many folks as one might think so far (more on that below).

AND: A rest in peace goes out today to the world’s oldest marathoner, Fauja Singh, who took up running at 89 years old, and ran a marathon at 100 years old before hanging up the jogging sneakers at 101. Unfortunately, he died after being hit by a car in India this week at the age of 114.

Just a reminder that nothing else is guaranteed in life except for the day in front of you — and that it’s never too late to try something or get moving on something you’ve been meaning to do!
