☀️NETFLIX tests theatrical with KNIVES OUT 2 "preview" stunt in Nov
Greengrass - Stephen King pic gets buyer / SECOND CITY coming to NYC / PAR+ & SHO head departing
Mornin! This is Sean McNulty and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on FRIDAY October 7, 2022.
Where as expected it was a slow news day yesterday morning so… hope you all got a chance to sleep in a bit for once like I did. And thanks to the reader who reached out about missing the newsletter in their inbox yesterday. Love you mom. ❤️
Super busy day today though - but first I’m both very excited… and a little sad, as one of my favorite series, “Derry Girls” hits NETFLIX today for its final season.
So if this newsletter has an Irish accent on Monday, you’ll know why. ☘️
A PUBLIC TRANSIT HEADS UP: As anyone else riding the 7 train will realize, COMIC-CON NYC is happening all weekend. 🦸
A SOCIAL MEDIA HEADS UP: TWITTER is now letting you add video, gif and photo links into one tweet, vs. only being able to link to one form of media.
PLUS: THE SECOND CITY is opening their first NYC outpost - a theater, 7 classrooms and a restaurant & bar location in Williamsburg #ofcourse. Should open this Summer, just in time for SNL 2023 scouting.
ALSO: Congrats to Hilary Swank on her announcement of twins on the way 👏.
PLUS: The Biebs is postponing his remaining tour dates for at least another 6 months. He announced a month ago that he was delaying remaining shows TBA to focus on his health.
IN TODAY’S EDITION:
“Thor” hammers “Pinocchio” on DIS+ opening weekend viewership chart
ESPN & AMAZON NFL audience comps are in
PAR+ leader unexpectedly departing, leaving big PAR+ leadership questions in the wake
SPOTIFY canceling 11 in-house podcasts
FACEBOOK’s austerity measures are now down to the internship program
An explosion of new trailers (and a couple excellent ones in the mix), a very busy weekend in new things to Stream and more
AND - A #MediaNerd🤓 PODCAST alert: Just a high recommend to check out our podcast with Vivek Couto from MEDIA PARTNERS ASIA (link here).
I know the vast majority of your jobs have nothing to directly do with the ASIA PACIFIC region…
BUT: If your job is related to Streaming (is there a job that isn’t anymore?) and you’re planning on sticking around for a while - your boss (or your boss’s boss) is going to be increasingly focused on it in the decade ahead, and this is the perfect & concise way to get up to speed as to why. Especially with Q3 Media Earnings Season a couple of weeks away.
Plus - it’s the perfect duration for a drive to a lunch in Burbank. Also - our free Ankler Hot Seat podcast will also feature a dive in the impending WGA Contract situation, with longtime WGA member Rob Long joining us. That should be up by lunchtime.
