Netflix Shows: The Opposite of Buzz 🐝
Big audiences? Sure. But binge vs. weekly data reveal what actually wins the conversation
One of the nice things about the Great Netflix Crash of 2022 is that we’re free to ask big questions, once again, about streaming, business models, and the future of entertainment. Two gigantic questions in particular stand out:
Should films go to theaters, go to streamers on the same day they go to theaters, or go to streaming services only?
Should streamers release their TV series binge or weekly?
On the first question, we don’t have answers. After this summer, we’ll know a lot more. (It’s looking like theatrical releases help films even once they go to a streamer, but since so many films have been released in so many different ways, it’s hard to figure out since it’s not apples-to-apples. Trust me, I’m working on it.)
On the second question, that’s what I’m going to try to answer today. And yes, I know: you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting an article on the internet about “binge vs weekly” releases.
