☀️NETFLIX Films 2023 Data: What Worked, What Didn't
New ‘Knives Out’ pic casts up / How the NETFLIX JLo pic did / SPC makes new buy
Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LinkedIn here if ya like), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on WEDNESDAY, May 29, 2024.
Where I’m sure that Dennis Rodman in Vegas movie would have been fun . . . but the movie I really wanna see happen is an adaptation of this fun Athletic story recounting something called the Kenny Rogers Classic Weekend, which was held for 3 years around the turn of the 1990s at the gambler’s estate in Georgia.
It seems Kenny brought together about 15 world-class athletes and TV celebs each year, from top NBA stars like Jordan, Dominique Wilkins and Larry Bird (whose world-renown charm sounds like it was in full effect), golfers Payne Stewart and Raymond Floyd, tennis players McEnroe and Connors, and such celebs as James Caan, Mark Harmon and Woody Harrelson (who skipped the Emmys, where he was nominated, to attend this).
The idea was to compete against each other for a weekend in various sports like basketball, golf, tennis and bass fishing (sports which Kenny would participate in as well), and generally just hang out for a weekend.
And apparently NBC Sports televised this. TV was a lot more fun in the 80s.
A really fun read to have with your lunch today, which I feel confident saying will be nowhere near the quality of a Kenny Rogers breakfast buffet. Also — here’s a retrospective piece on YT (of course), and gotta round out here with the gambler faking out the best NBA player ever.
OH: Add JLo to the list of celebs having to deal with AI-generated fake product endorsements circulating on major social media platforms. Ya know, just like you often see on ABC Wednesday nights.
PLUS: The Daily Beast is instituting a round of voluntary buyouts this summer, as part of a $1.5M cost-cutting effort by the new management installed by IAC. The company has about 100 employees according to NYT.
REST IN PEACE: Goes out to longtime producer Al Ruddy — who did films ranging from The Godfather to The Longest Yard to Cannonball Run to Million Dollar Baby. Al died at the age of 94 over the weekend in L.A.
