☀️NETFLIX Film Chart Bottoms Out Before Huge Fall Spree Begins
Record-setting wknd Sports audiences / ROADSHOW moves away from Oct Swift / Modern Family's quadruple dip
Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LinkedIn here if ya like), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on WEDNESDAY Sept. 13, 2023.
Where sadly I walked home empty-handed from the VMAs last night. I asked if they had an extra one of these, and was kindly asked to move along so other people could make the same joke.
AND: Many thanks to the folks at PARAMOUNT for the invite - Sean 2005 is very jealous of Sean 2023 (thankfully Sean 2005 already started shaving his head so he wasn’t floored to see that development to our ‘look’).
Gotta give props to Demi Lovato for bringing the heat, and her band for the ‘real actual band’ energy - take that AI!
MTV still knows how to put on a show - we’ll see if basic cable can still deliver an audience when the NIELSENS hit later today…
OH RIGHT: Here is the list of VMA winners.
NEW: Affleck also continued his 2023 DUNKIN’ run last night, this time with an Ice Spice assist. OK pretty good, but still so much to mine here! DUNKIN’, email me - I got jokes! (seanmcnultynyc@gmail.com - first two are free!)
ALSO: Jason Blum is gonna be on Shark Tank this season (uhhh - judging, not pitching - although I wouldn’t put sliding one in past ‘em).
THEN: Here is your DWTS cast for the fall season back on ABC, including Mira Sorvino, former NFL player Adrian Peterson, Barry Williams and Ian Walsh.
QUADRUPLE DIP: 20th TV’s Modern Family is now airing on TBS for three hours a day, in addition to its existing airings across NBCU Cable networks (currently on E!). So $100 a month SPECTRUM Cable TV subscribers (and all Bundle subs), you’re now paying for the show twice - welcome to the Cable Bundle.
OH THEN: If you also have HULU and PEACOCK, you’re paying for it two more times… as all episodes are streaming on both.
BUT: Kudos to the 20th TV Sales team on gettin’ that 💰 tho!
YA KNOW: It’s kinda odd that a cable company is the one fighting for the rights of the people who pay them money… but CHARTER wasn’t wrong here about Cable TV bundle customers not getting access to things they’re already paying for in the streaming era.
PLUS: Gotta say, this is pretty cool - Darren Aronofsky sharing what things look like inside Vegas’ soon to open SPHERE. Part concert stage… part planetarium almost? 🤔

NETFLIX Films Weekly Global Viewership Chart
Week of Sept 4 thru Sept 10:
usual caveats: back of the napkin math, assumes everyone finished the movie (including the credits), no one watched twice, or that a bunch of folks didn’t rewind certain parts, etc. so consider these minimum numbers. and it’s based on NETFLIX’s self-reported numbers.
